Hi everyone,

I'm asking for ideas on how to start a club. We're really small right now and our club is on a college campus. We want to focus on all different types of art and literature. Generally when people think of a literature club their first thoughts are: all we do is read books and write. They just think its another English class. Too many students think that literature and art is all about listening to Beethoven, watching ballet and going to poetry reading. These are subjects related to literature and art but there are so much more.

We need help to have a club name that brings some fun and spice to the club. We want a name to catch people's attention and to have them want to ask us what type of club are we. Using an Acronym would be great also.

Right now our club has about 5-7 people and we want more members from all different types of background.
We need help to catch the interest of the young adult attention from college.

Thanks everyone

Hi Jennifer -- One idea I have is to link the club name to the school mascot.

Another thought I have is to keep the word "lit" or literature out of the name. It's a yawner. Art is more exciting, especially when its pop art or alternative art.

Perhaps you could get the idea of adventue into the name???

Art and Word Safari?

WordArt Safari?

ArtWord Bound (pun on Outward Bound adventures)

I'm also wondering if you could identity a purpose. For example, sometimes we associate esthetic exploration with the heart or soul. One organization that sponsors crafts workshops calls itself Art and Soul.

I love the word bohemian, because it conjures up the black-clad beatniks of my youth in smoking jazz cafes, thumping bongo drums and reading poetry. I don't know if the word bohemian resonates with your generation. It could be shortened to make the group the 'bos -- As in Jazz 'bos. Which sounds kind of good, but you didn't mention music, rather books and art.

You might hold a contest with a cash prize to name the group to pique interest. I'd make sure that I had a very strong mission statement and a list of at least 4 upcoming events, be they book discussions, trip to an art gallery, PowerPoint slide show of someone's art, or even a getting-to-know you mixer, so that you would be presenting the group as active and dynamic, rather than a vague idea.

I hope this helps.
