Hi folks,

As a continuing part of Psych Central's efforts to try and share our expertise with the world (e.g., our Resource Directory is one example of this), we're working with Google's new Co-op program to "tag" trusted resources we've come across online. While many of these resources are ours (naturally!), about 60% of our tagging is non-PC content.

If you use Google to search, please consider adding our expertise to your search results. Our expertise is only in health content, so it won't affect most of your searches. But if you do subscribe to our efforts, hopefully your mental health searches will be slightly better because of your subscription. As we add more and more quality content to our tags, it will hopefully become better with time.

Thank you for your kind consideration:

I would really, really appreciate everyone who has read this thread but who hasn't followed the link and subscribed to please consider doing so.

As LadyDragus noted, I very rarely ask for members to do anything here other than to enjoy the support offered or given here. This is one time I'm asking members -- you, specifically -- to help Psych Central out with an important project it is undertaking. We only have *4* people subscribed right now. I'd like that to be 104 if at all possible....

Thanks,
John

In my understanding from reading today when I joined...

DocJohn has added search results for PC (and other trusted sites).

If we join, we're stating that we wanted those trusted resources to pop up first within our searches within google IF it's something that he's contributed.

Not only does it help get the word out, get more people viewing, get google to recognize these sites, etc., but it also helps to push the "trash" sites and sites that are not trusted to the background in google searches.

In other words, if we type in a health search at google and it's something that DocJohn has placed there, it will show up first of our searches. We know it's good, trusted material and he's getting the resources out there.

A win-win.

KD

Actually, I should've explained more thoroughly what you 'get' when you do this...

First, it's free. It costs nothing. But I think you need a free "Google Account" in order for this to work. A Google Account is a pretty good thing to have anyways, because it gives you access to a lot of other free Google services as well (such as a customized homepage, if you'd like).

Google is working on a method to try and help people find better health information. They are doing this through something they call "Google Co-op." Co-op allows Psych Central to "tag" content based upon what it is, to help people more easily find the good stuff.

If you are logged into your Google Account and go to Google.com, do a search for ADHD:

adhd

You will see a screen that looks like this:

Please Subscribe to Psych Central's Search Results on Google

Notice, those results are pretty good (hey, it's Google after all), but also notice that Google understands you're looking for health information now. It offers you a chance to refine your results: Refine results for adhd.

Now click on Symptoms. You should see a page that looks like this:

Please Subscribe to Psych Central's Search Results on Google

Notice the citations I've circled. That's us! These resources have been specifically recommended by us (and other health websites, you'll notice, like WebMD, the National Library of Medicine, the CDC, etc.).

It is hoped that if enough people with knowledge in a specific disease or disorder area can contribute to tagging topics like this, Google will become "smarter" and help people out with their health searches better. It's basically using the power of humans to refine their search results.

Best,
John

Oh, wow. Thank you for explaining. I was looking in the wrong area. I read wrong when I read about the Co-Op Program.

I think I understand the rest, but so glad I'll be looking in the right place.

I think alot of us want trusted sites when we search.

Thank you for such a detailed explanation.

OH, Thank you DocJohn for explaining it in such detail, I understand now and will subscribe later today. I "google" things all the time-- this should help to make my searches more fruitful! Please Subscribe to Psych Central's Search Results on Google

And thanks Kimmy for taking the time to also further explain.

Hey thanks _zh, for standing by my side-- sure feels nice when someone is so kind to help one not feel so alone and clueless.("clueless" can be a triggering feeling at times for me Please Subscribe to Psych Central's Search Results on Google)

thank you. your explanation was understandable by this medication induced congnitively challenged brain.

thank you for explaining specifically what this is, who it benefits and why we'd all be interested in participating.

the medical sites co-op linked that we saw in one quick glance were of the quality of what we'd hope to find in a search......if this assists that then groovy Please Subscribe to Psych Central's Search Results on Google

thank you again for spelling it out more clearly......yesterday we had read the link, reread it and still were lost. you cleared up our muddy confusion.
