My daughter left a text letting me know. I was shocked! One of my favourite actors... he'll be missed for sure by my family and me.

Very sad news!!

Was really shocked by this. "Dead Poet's Society" is one of my favorite movies, and "Mork and Mindy" was one of my favorite shows growing up. Like I told my husband after hearing this, though, it's our comedians, those who make us laugh, who are usually suffering inside.

It is such a shock to lose this wonderful human who brought to us joy even in our sorrow.

News reports now suggest William's was actually being hospitalized in July for his severe depression. Due to the stigma of mental illness, his reps report he was in rehab. What pain he must have been in.

It is such sad news to hear this---he had come so far with his therapy and detox.

I felt as if he was a long-lost friend at times. How I wish I could have known him.

What a terrible, tragic thing.

Carol Burnett said "Tragedy plus time equals comedy". Sometimes we don't realize how much a person is suffering because they're "On" and funny. I have always tried so hard to keep up a good front. I keep telling myself to fake it and eventually I will feel better. I can imagine how he felt and my heart breaks for him. ....into paradise may the angels guide him

He was something of a father figure for me. As a kid I wanted Steve Martin or Robin Williams as a dad.

I am devastated, completely shocked, numb, and just plain sad. I know people die all the time, celebrities die all the time, and it doesn't send me into a tailspin, but to know that he was so depressed....such a beautiful soul, well, I know there's a lot of us who can certainly identify with his pain, especially here, on this site. I cry for his loss not because the world has lost a very talented and gifted man, but because he was one of us, and I know now how he struggled, using humor (though his was waaaaaaay better than mine) to cope with his effed up brain chemistry. I was so close to that cliff once, and found a way to take a step backward and remind myself of all the reasons I wanted to live. It breaks my heart to know that he was beyond the point where he could do that.

Hopefully.....maybe......finally...........the public in general will finally start to take mental illnesses, including severe depression seriously.

I was going to post the song by Bobby McFerrin "Dont worry be happy". Williams was dancing in the background. Some where as I was searching for this song I saw that Bobby McFerrin also committed suicide.

Is the whole world nuts??????? So sad........

The news shocked the bejeebers out of me. Took my breath away. Now, for some reason, I'm becoming angry, God help me. I'm sorry.

I am deeply saddened. One of my favourite actors. I can't imagine the pain he must of been feeling.

If someone with all those resources and such a community of support can slip away....what about all the ones with no safety network. Mental Illness needs to come out from the shadows.
I called half a dozen suicide hotlines last night and was put on hold every time. The stigma needs to be obliterated and society needs to step up to help the ones in pain.

RIP Robin - keep the angels laughing, may you find the peace that apparently eluded you on this earth.

I was just thinking, maybe he was like a lot of us on PC.

How many put on a mask for the world to see while inside they are crying?

I am shocked too and its so painful to think he was hurting so much. So sad. I really liked him as an actor and loved his movies. He always seemed a cheerful person but deep too. Or maybe these were the roles he played. I have to acknowledge and admit i knew nothing about him as the man behind his actor roles. And few actually can say they did, i guess. This is a bit shocking and weird too to think about. Anyway, i hope he is in peace now. And i'm thankful for all he has given me and the world. Thank you Robin. RIP.

RIP Robin Williams. I am having a hard time with this. I don't like when people say suicide is a choice. It is NOT a choice of a healthy mind. And another thing that bothers me is sayings like.. We may never know the answer. I personally want to know the answer so this terrible illness can be stopped! I am tired of having depression all my life and just getting through this life as I am sure he was too. Thanks for the comic relief Robin.

I think being famous and having hoards of strangers love you would be a lot of pressure. He was always expected to be funny and all smiles. I may not have his resources or following but Imo that's better. It's easy for me to choose to isolate if needed. I don't have to act for people who think they know me.

Already I am so tired of hearing about this. People don't get it. He was bipolar and used coke to self-medicate. My brother sends me an email (which he rarely does) about Williams while he's watched me deteriorate for the last 35 years (ie. on SSDI 14 yrs out of last 20 yrs) and rarely shown any empathy towards me or opened up dialogue with me. Family members don't get it. He told his entire family about my situation and now my nephews and niece are frightened of me. I told my father I wanted him to apologize, all he had to say was "I think we should forgive people". Right, Pa! Enough of this.

I feel bad for Williams. But he harnessed his racing thoughts somehow and made them work for him. Lots of manic-depressives w/racing thoughts are dysfunctional and are completely drained mentally and physically. The Media's totally overlooking the root of his problem.

Will this bring attention to Mental Illness? I highly doubt it: just another entertainer who was an addict.

I do not know if his passing was a suicide or not..... I am not sure if I care how he died. It is a loss. Period.

but if it was suicide - then I guess I would simply say that I am sorry that he could not find the happiness, the love, the support that he needed. Money does NOT equal happiness.

Much sadness

I'm surprised that so few people mention Robin's role in The Dead Poet's Society. His role as Mr. Keating was pure magic.

What a way to bust down that wall and get people to start talking about it....I mean about the everyday people who have bipolar or depression, the ones who don't use coke to self medicate, who don't go on killing sprees. The ones who struggle to live, to pay for treatment. Which is most of us.
