I'm pleased to tell you that PepsiCo has announced that it will not conduct or fund experiments on animals and is pledging to communicate its opposition to animal testing to all entities with which the corporation works. PepsiCo has posted the following statement on its Web site:

"PepsiCo does not do any animal testing and does not directly fund testing using animals. ...Where testing on animals is not required, PepsiCo strongly endorses efficient and effective research that does not include the use of animals. We will encourage our partners to use alternatives to animal testing and share this statement with organizations we believe to be involved in projects potentially involving animal research done on behalf of PepsiCo or with PepsiCo or PepsiCo Foundation funding."

PepsiCo now joins POM Wonderful, Ocean Spray, and Welch's in banning animal tests after hearing from PETA, along with 22 other beverage companies-including Campbell's V8, Sunny Delight, and Old Orchard-that have pledged to PETA that they will not fund or conduct animal tests.

Tragically, companies like Coca-Cola and Unilever (maker of Lipton Tea and other food products) continue to conduct and fund needless tests on animals simply to substantiate health claims or assure product safety. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states: "[T]he Agency is not aware of any circumstances that would result in the FDA requiring a food or beverage company to conduct laboratory experiments on animals ..." We need your help to urge these companies to end their animal tests. Please write to them at the addresses shown below:

The idea of testing with animals in food products makes me suspicious to begin with.. why are they even using products in food that require testing on animals to begin with? That sort of scares me.

But good news about pepsi... guess coke is off my list from now on.

yikes... had no idea coke and lipton tested on animals.. sooooooo very sad what the animals endure.. I did an essay for my son on animal testing and it broke my heart the pain and suffering these poor animals go through. Even well known, expensive dog food, names kind of slipped my mind at the moment, anyway even the dog food companies that proclaim love for animals abuse animals for testing...These animals are force fed with tubes..sometimes dogs are debarked, so the technicians cannot hear the cries of pain from the dogs.. oo these r just a few things they endure on a daily basis... grrrrrrr Very touchy topic for me.. and looks like lipton will be off my groc list.. i seldom drink soda, but will never ever buy coke.. thinks i will spread the word too... because most folks aren't aware of what happens to these animals ....i know i wasn't, that is until i did the essay

Animal testing should be banned in USA.....

not sure i agree with your comment that obviously we need animal testing for drugs and medical treatments... animals are tortured and endure tremendous pain when they are used for medical treatment testing.. bones are broken while the animals are awake and nothing is used to ease the animals pain, as they are being tested for pain endurance.. this is just one example...there are many more horror stories... grrr

ALL animal testing for food, medical, drugs, whatever, should be banned in USA..

if you are strong and dedicated to ending animal testing, go to the PETA website and there are a variety of ways you can help. they go from things like i do (fur protests in Austin and handing out "don't chain your dogs" in lockhart) or you can view videos and get other people to view them so they know first hand what kind of cruelty these animals suffer.

i can't view the videos but i work as hard (as you all have had to hear YEEHAW.......PEPSI QUIT ANIMAL TESTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YEEHAW.......PEPSI QUIT ANIMAL TESTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) as i can on all sorts of animal activist issues. PETA supplies my materials free and i feel a lot better knowing that i might make a difference someday, somewhere.

the BIG DEAL is that you can get info on every company that DOESN'T TEST AND THEN YOU KNOW WHO TO BUY!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE THAT!!!!! it blew my mind when i found out that Family Dollar sells "Sun" washing detergent and it isn't tested on animals. it's endorsed by PETA. i've been using it for years and didn't even know i could find out if they tested til i joined PETA.

they will send you a booklet for your shopping convenience. you can also get the lists of who does test. Iams does, for instance. and i've corresponded with them about it. they do some horrid things.

i've never drank any tea but Liptons.......... YEEHAW.......PEPSI QUIT ANIMAL TESTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and no soda except coke. YEEHAW.......PEPSI QUIT ANIMAL TESTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and that is so OVER..........please contact them!!! i did!!!

love and thank you all!!! pat

Prior to its agreement with PETA, PepsiCo and its partners had funded several experiments on animals:

The PepsiCo Foundation funded an experiment that involved surgically implanting testosterone pellets and human prostate tumors in mice and injecting them with an acid compound. Two animals died before the end of the study, when all the animals were killed.

PepsiCo's partner, Tropicana, funded a student research project that involved injecting 60 young rats with a chemical that causes colon cancer, leaving the majority of these animals to suffer with the disease for seven months, only to be killed at the end of the experiment.

PepsiCo's affiliate, the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI), funded an experiment in which mice were infected with a respiratory virus and then forced to exercise on a treadmill for more than two hours for three consecutive days, after which they were all killed.
The GSSI funded an experiment in which live rats' hind limbs were cut open from the heel to the knee and their muscle tissue was cut out, after which the animals were killed.

The GSSI awarded several grants to students to conduct animal experiments, such as one in which a student caused rats' muscles to waste away in order to learn how various protein supplements could re-grow the tissue.

They aren't always testing with the drink product. As you can see, they support grants and experiments for various cruel experiments.

That is sick. I thought you meant they made the animals drink the stuff which would not be so sad. This is just sick..I could not read it all YEEHAW.......PEPSI QUIT ANIMAL TESTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Though, on the lab rats I am not against testing on them IF it will help humans and is kind of humane
