Do kids still get the measles these days?? As far as I know, none of my other grandkids has had them. I thought there was an immunization for them. HOWSOMEVER... my one yr old grandson seems to have them. His doctor denied it but called it "The Fifth Decease"???? To me, THAT'S THE MEASLES!

Any young mothers out there that can help me out?

I'm not a mother, but I know that you have to have immunization to measles to be in public school (MMR, measles, mumps, rubella shot). I don't know about someone as young as this boy, if he would have been immunized or if he could still get it. I looked up the Fifth Disease http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifth_disease and it doesn't seem like it's the same as measles, but I don't know exactly what the child's symptoms are, but if the doctor said Fifth Disease, it seems to be different.

I'm not a young mother, but I can help you out.

Measles can still be gotten. The vaccine that had been used since the '50s turns out to wear off. The CDC and others have been recommending adults who got the vaccine from like the mid-1950s through the 1970s (at least) get revaccinated. I had to do it when I went back to college at 30, believe it or not, or they wouldn't let me take classes.

There is now a "MMR" vaccine, measles-mumps-rubella, but I'm not up to date anymore on the ages kids are supposed to get it.

My son was immunized for measles (rubella) (more than once) and hasn't had it yet (he is 9 years old). There were a few scares when he was younger but it always turned out to be something else. He has only had the chickenpox which he politely gave to a 30+ year old man but being an ex-boyfriend, there were no hard feelings on our side .... sorry - that was off topic!

I've never heard of the "Fifth Decease" but it sounds scary..... Did you mean disease?

According to this page I Googled up, Fifth Disease and Measles are related, but not the same thing. I'd never heard of it, either!

EDIT: You got 4 answers posted at almost the same time! lol!

His symptoms are those of the measles. He started with a runny nose on Fri, went to a high fever on Sat and part of Sun, then everything subsided until the middle of Mon when his mom noticed the splotches on the back of his neck and his little armpits. Now he's broke out all over. Question!

They called me about an hour ago to say they were taking him to get some blood drawn. Question! Question! Poor widdow baby! I'm sure he loved that!! The results won't be in for a week. I'm sure it will all be over by then. The doctor told my son that, too. I have absolutely NO FAITH in this guy. He was my doctor for about two months then I fired him! Question!

Well, I wish you good luck with everything that's happening. It's hard, especially when you can't be 100% sure what's going on and you don't trust the doctor! (((september)))

Question! That's right! I had totally forgotten about the MMR vaccine! What can I say? My youngest is 28!

I don't remember at what age they get the MMR, either.

Thanks for jogging my memory, Candy! Question!

LOL You didn't hijack the thread. Chicken pox go right along with measles.

Question! And yes, I misspelled the word! Question! Question! Didn't even stop to think about it.

You know, if it's not one thing with kids, it's another. I was about to say that I'm so glad I'm done with all that, but I'm not. It starts all over again with the grandkids! LOL

I had never heard of it, either. But my husband named off the childhood ... er... sicknesses (LOL) and there ARE/WERE five of them.

My son told me basically the same thing that you said, Cheri, so I guess it's back to square one. I'm gonna read up on the links that have been offered. Probably won't know anymore than I know now but I might feel better! Question! EEESH! Once a mother, ALWAYS a mother!

Question! I noticed the four sudden responses all at the same time! LOL

A week for the results? That seems pretty long to me!

Poor little guy!

I have heard of that "Fifth Disease". One of my sons had it when he was younger.

When you're a mother with a sick child, you could give a rat's ***** whether is techically the same or different.

Your child is hurting. You want to know what you can do to make him feel better and ease his discomfort. Because his pain is your pain.

(Frog steps down from soap box)

Instead of flapping my jaw, I wish I could offer some great advice. How about...
Give your daughter & grandson a big hug. I don't know if it will help them but it will sure make you feel better.

LOL Get back up on your soapbox, frog! You're a mother after my own heart! Question! Tell me, is it like the Three Day Measles or the German Measles?

My DIL has called me twice just to let me listen to him whimper. Question! She wants me to talk to him.

I told her to get in her car and drive over here so I could spell her or watch the other two kids, but she won't. She can't even send the two older ones over to her mom's house, who lives right next door, because her sister who lives with Mom has a new baby. Oh, well. I offered.

Ya know, after the last time I talked to my DIL, I thought that maybe it could be a reaction from a vaccine, but I don't know how long it's been since he's had one. Oh, well... time will tell. Question!

Parvo is what kills dogs, right? How could that be in a child? Question!

Don't ask me! The article says this virus lives only in humans.

They just acquired a couple of weenie dogs and one of them has seizures. Don't think I didn't think of that! Question!

These two kids don't seem to have any common sense when it comes to being parents! Question!

There's a human version of parvo, as well as a canine version.....

(sorry if I'm coming across as a smart-*****, I used to work for a medical publisher....)
