So last night I was driving home from my sister in laws house pretty late, like around 11. I live in a rural area so there really were not many people on the road.

A car comes speeding up behind me with his bright lights on and slams on his breaks right behind me and then proceeds to tailgate me very closely. I couldn't even see the car because of the bright lights. I was freaked out but I knew I was coming up on a passing zone so I just held me speed (which was about 5 over the speed limit). Well, he didn't pass me at the passing zone so then I started getting really freaked out. I decided to increase my speed a little bit to see if he would get off my tail. That didn't work. He kept so close behind me I thought he would hit me.

At this point I was hysterical (I'm already a nervous driver), he was driving really agressively. So I decide to pick up my cell phone and call the police. While I was on the phone talking to the person describing my location the person behind me turns on his lights, and it is now apparent that it was a police officer. He pulls me over for speeding!

I was crying and hysterical when he came over to the car and still on the phone with the police explaining that it was the police that had royally scared the hell out of me. He didn't give me a ticket after going back to his car and I assume getting an ear full. he just told me that it was dangerous to speed!

I more annoyed now that I have had time to think about the whole situation. Was he trying to get me to speed? I'm not really sure, but the whole experiece was really scary.

Gem,

I would have felt the same. Sounds like he is one stupid cop. He could have caused an accident. I hope he does get an ear bashing for this.

I would have been scared also! The town cops in the little town in which I work used to like to stop women drivers...Very unnerving, and who can say what their motivations are?

They always tell women if that happens to drive to the nearest police or fire station regardless if it's a real cop or not, because creeps have been known to use lights etc. and pose as cops. Scared then annoyed

I would be pissed Gem. I'm sorry that happened to you. Scared then annoyed

So sorry this happened to you Gem. But you did exactly the right thing in calling the police while he was tailgating you! Good job!!

Sometimes I wonder what the cops are thinking of when they do things like that. To travel so far on your bumper like that is crazy without trying to pull you over sooner. Good grief....*sigh*

Glad you didn't get a ticket and that you are safe and sound now.

I got a call later yesterday from another police officer who said they are completing an internal investigation, because there have been a few complaints about this officer.

Petunia, my first thought when I saw his lights was that maybe it wasn't a real cop, because we have had that happen here too. I asked the person I was on the phone with if I was really being pulled over by one of their officers.

I just don't see how they can blatently disregard traffic laws. I told the officer that called me yesterday (who was very understanding) that if that had been a civilian that was doing that the police would have come and pulled him over and ticketed him for a lot of things.

I'm glad that you came to no harm through it, but tail-gating is really annoying and quite un-nerving.

I was out with my friend last night and she was driving, and there was a driver following us really closely (and she was already speeding). So she didn't slow down, she kept braking abruptly, obviously the driver behind us had to keep watching or else he'd have run into us (and it would all be his fault, because he would have to have kept his distance), so actually it made it very funny, because he kept having to slow down when she braked (and having to give us some room) and then drove closer again. But it's not really something you'd want to do on your own though. It's good that police officer is under an inquiry, he should be subject to all road rules, just because he is a policeman doesn't mean he's above the law.
