-The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high
and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.

It's funny how some of you seem to indentify so deeply with this quote and it seems to contrary to my own way of looking at things. My mom recently said to me that I wouldn't be happy until I'd won the Nobel Peace Prize and that held more truth to it.

Di,

The converse to that is that perfectionism is paralyzing. It keeps us from trying at all, as opposed to aiming as high as we can and congratulating ourselves for as high as we get before taking another shot to see if we can do even better. So you are better off if you appreciate what you achieve, but don't stop there. Am I making any sense?

So, I guess misintrepeted the quote the problem is: in reacting to our perfectionism we completely lower the bar, but when we meet our reduced expectations we don't attempt to raise them in a reasonable fashion. I think I understand what you're saying now.

HMMM interesting comments here.

What I read is that for MOST of us, we only aim for what we know we can do: something safe. Yet, we should aim higher, even if we miss.

As for perfectionism, the problem with that is that you can NEVER attain perfect, though you might constantly try. And the problem within that is your attitude about it: you feel like a failure when you don't produce perfection! Nothing is good enough, you always feel like you can do better if... and thus you translate this into, "I am not good enough." The stress can kill you.

<font color=purple>Ideally, we feel safe enough to aim higher than we can safely see, and accept the elements learned for the trying, regardless of the outcome, and once in a while, we will soar with the eagles!

Whaddya think?
