I just had a run in with a bill collector. I realize they are just doing their job to get the money owed to them but to abuse me verbally I don't take that very well since emotionally I'm doing well. I told them I didn't have a job and was filing for disability and when that happened I'd be filing for bankruptcy. They told me that bankruptcy wouldn't make them go away and that I need to grow up and get a job. Ummmmm if I could get a job would I be filing for disablity ummm no. I am now feeling lower than low and am counting the minutes until the substitute therapist calls me to hopefully give me some words of encouragement. I read on a website that the way they treated me is illegal but how do I prove it? I don't know how to wire tap a phone. I called my dad to see if he'd call them on his lunch hour and read them the riot act but he didn't have a pen on him to write down the number.
I hate that I am put in this postion because I am poor. I am thinking that it would have been a good thing if I died. Don't Blame me I just do what the Voices Tell me to do

Jannie,
I am so sorry to hear that this bill collector was so mean to you. My husband and I have gone through our fair share of bill collectors calling constantly and being rude we too went through bankruptcy. Try not to let this individual get you down. The reason these bill collectors press so hard is because they make comission of the debts they collect on so they will do almost anything to make you pay including being verbally abusive which is not legal. I am by no means excusing this behavior on their end at all. They have to abide by certain laws and these laws are especially strict when it comes to consumer debt. Try finding out more online about consumer debt laws because I know they are strict. If you gather this information regarding the debt laws you can shoot down those bill collectors with hard facts and they will be less likely to be nasty. If they continue to be rude and violate the laws I'd see about finding an attorney and suing the pants off them. Jannie, Don't let them get you down. Try to be strong. We will all help you here as much as we can. You are a valuable person who is loved! Take care and keep us updated. If I can help in any way please let me know. Take care and keep us posted. That's horrible to be treated like that on the phone. I do understand that they are working on commision/percentage but they should also be thinking about the best way to get their money.
Most collectors are very happy once you are back on your feet enough to offer them something, ten bucks a month, five bucks a month... whatever. Say at some point in the future you felt you would be able to do that. Would you call these people back and set up scheduled payments? Or would you call someone who was firm, but not rude when discussing this. I think that people like the one's you spoke to today are shooting themselves in the foot. I think you're more likely to just stop answering their calls altogether, since you know it is going to be a stressful, unpleasant experience to talk to them. Anyway good luck and try not to let this idiot on the phone get to you for too long. ------------------------------------ --http://www.idexter.com

I called my dad and asked him to call them back for me and set them straight but he had to go outside to answer his cell phone and didn't grab a pen. But he told me to save that number and look up info on creditor laws because he thought it was illegal for them to abuse me. Well I did that and found out he's right so we will see what goes on from there.
Thanks for all the support. I did talk with the therapist told her what went on this weekend with my OD and she's going to talk to the doctor tomorrow as to if I get my meds back at all. Janniebug Don't Blame me I just do what the Voices Tell me to do

Once they receive proof that you have filed bankruptcy (which I know, you said you haven't yet) they HAVE to stop calling and sending bills to you. If they do call after they have received the notification they can be fined, I think it was $100 every time they call afterwards. At least that's some consolation if you do decide to file. I filed after the 3rd time I had gotten myself majorly into debt, mostly with credit cards, and yes, I spent when depressed. The only thing I couldn't include was a student loan. The lawyer said that you pretty much have to prove that you're so disabled you can absolutely never work again to get out of paying off one of those. I have a huge car payment though, and I was afraid once they saw that amount that would spell trouble, but nope! I'm still making my lease payments and plan to buy it soon when the lease is up, then I'll have something of "value" (they say Porsche's hold their value, we'll see!) when it's paid off.

man, the world today is sickening. Money is the root of all evil, that's the truth. There was absoloutly no need for them to verbally abuse you like that. I hate bill collectors. We get handfulls of them calling all day long, 24/7. It's like I know you're doing your job, but damn. We are doing so bad financially and that's a big factor in my depression/moods. And having those damn bill collectors calling all day is just a constant reminder of yeah, we're screwed. Anyway, sorry i got off topic, i am very passionate about that sort of thing, lol. They had no right to do that to you. Don't let it take you down though because they are the ones that are so closed minded and immature. *hugs* I hope everything works out for you!!!
