I contacted the Golden Retriever Rescue and a rep came to my house to meet Henry. He suggested placing her with the Ohio Golden rescue rep who will place her with an inmate in the Ohio prison system, where she will get training, and after which there are numerous people in line to adopt such dogs. They are excited about getting Henry, as she is a beautiful Golden. Before she is adopted by any prospective owners, she will be spayed and home visits will be made. I'm excited for Henry as I think this is a good thing for her. Also, I'm making a monetary donation of $100 for her care.

Good for you! This is good news. Hopefully Henry will be someone's guide dog or such? Only about 1 in 10,000 disabled people who need service dogs receive one. Henry is going to prison... (We need more puppy raisers!)

Thanks, so much, Sky, for the words of approval. Henry is such a smart and sweet dog, and I am not doing her justice...as I'm gone all day at work and come home tired. I'm hoping she will be a good student and become someone's loving pet, or even a guide dog or therapy dog. I am going to ask them to keep me posted of her progress.

What you are doing is a very selfless thing! I think it's wonderful that Henry will become a well trained and beloved (not that she isn't already) companion for someone in need. You go girl!!!

Thanks, Wants...It's not so much wisdom as necessity, but I do feel this is the best thing for Henry. I've watched some programs on Animal Planet about the prison training system of dogs, and it benefits not only the dog, but gives the inmate a sense of purpose as well. I hope to keep tabs on her progress and keep everyone posted here.
Love,
Patty

Patty,

This is a wonderful thing you are doing for Henry. It is hard to make decisions like that...it is so wonderful that you are able to put the emotional tie that bonds us to our babies aside for the best interest of Henry. I am very proud of what you are doing....& I know you are too. I know how much it hurts to think of not having your baby around.....but knowing how much better off she will be in the long run is so important.

It is great to be able to keep in touch.....that helps in the process too so that you can see what a wonderful life Henry will end up with which is much better than just handing her off & never knowing how she is doing in the future. Knowing that you are helping other people by letting her go......is a wonderful feeling that can help take away the sadness of her not being yours.

Way to go Patty,
Debbie

This is wonderful! When I saw the subject, I thought it was something bad, LOL! But this is great.

I didn't realize so few disabled people who need service dogs get them. That's terrible. Dogs eligible to be service dogs are helped by this service as much as the disabled persons.

BTW, for anyone interested: Psychiatric Service Dog Society (PSDS)

Thanks, Maven, Debbie, and Bebop,
Henry has been loving on me and pestering me since I got home from work. She is bored here, and needs attention and training. I'm going to give her a bath (whew! Henry is going to prison...) and flea treatment tomorrow before taking her to the rep from Golden Retriever Rescue, at which time, I'll ask her to keep me informed of Henry's progress.
