There is a lot of information online about PTSD if you google it. Also, you could try reading posts on the PTSD board of this forum.

it stems from trauma. I would have to know a great deal more to describe to you what she is dealing with. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder obviously developes from the experience of what is usually an extreme trauma. This can be from a single event to being triggered by repetitive situations.

Now, not all people go through trauma the same way. A good example is bullying. Some people move on from this with relative ease while for others it becomes traumatic.

Another example is somethig happening like being a participant or witness to a horrific car accident.

We more commonly think though of PTSD occuring from things like sexual assaults, military battlefield experiences, abuse, etc.

There are enumerable ways in which the consequences of PTSD come about. People can become trapped in their memories/thoughts.

examples of emotional responses can include panic attacks, dissociation, depression, aggression, etc.

I have PTSD myself. I won't detail my personal story only to say that I went through most of my adult life managing to keep it locked away until an assault happened in my workplace and it all came crashing out.

I have PTSD from 3 seperate vehicle accidents which were not my fault. I am scares @!##less to even get in a car but i have no choice. I have drs appointments and family responsibilities, i still don't drive as my husband takes me everywhere. I feel so guilty about it but that is what i have to do. My son was also in 3 car accidents and he is 26 yrs old. i just don't know what each day is going to hold.

avlady - I have been doing a lot of Catastrophic Thinking work. While my anxieties still have a hold on my life I am able to mostly function - like drive a car, be in a crowded situation, and go to large very crowded stores. even better, I can do these things spontaneously now. Still, while participating in these things I have to rely on coping skills but, excepting a few types of situations, the fear generally doesn't prevent me from crossing the barrier

My suggestion is to do some homework (CBT sites are good for worksheets on 'de-catastrophic thinking) before having to face riding in a car.
