How did everyone choose their screen names?

Mine is from a holly: Ilex aquifolium "Silver Queen". See, I like plants and I thought that was a good name.

I just made mine up. Actually, I did it for a Lord of the Rings chatroom, went for something elf-like. Chose T because that's what my name starts with, and it needed to sound feminine, so I looked at Tolkien's elf names and came up with this.
It's not my normal screen name, but I was kind of afraid of someone happening across here and recognizing me, I wanted to be more anonymous, so I used it. A Question

The name I usually use is MezzoJo, because I'm a mezzo-soprano, and my name is Jo. I shortened it to mj here, and added 14 because it's one of my numbers.

A Question The resemblance is uncanny.

Sometimes I lie awake at night in bed and I ask, "Is it all worth it?" And then a voice says, "Who are you talking to?" And another voice says, "You mean, ' To whom are you talking?'" And I say, "No wonder I lie awake at night."--Charlie Brown

Good question; it's been too serious in here lately.
I should have gone more anonymous with my name as I'm normally a very secretive person, but decided my depression and PTSD is nothing to be ashamed about. Jon is first name, Alexa from last name+Alexander; I have used it for years as email addresses, normal for me to use it in here too.

I have always considered myself somewhat 'crazy' and my first name is Chris so I came up with 'KrzyKris' only it would not let me leave it at that so I had to add the 101 so I beacame krzykris101. A Question

Mine was the answer to a baby name in a trivial game. I wanted something different and totally anonymous and it is both. I have however become attached to it as my name.

Just seems that whenever I "look up" the Sky b dark.... I wanted just sky but it wouldn't allow so short... I will fly someday... into the sky... it's gonna be timing as to whether I plummet to earth, or continue upward.<font color=purple>

Rapunzel fits me on more than one level. The first time I used that name was for a retreat (a bunch of fiber artists hanging around together for a few days), and we all had to have an alias. I couldn't think of one, so they named me Rapunzel because of my hair. When I first joined this site I started out using my real name, and then it started to bother me that I was sharing pretty sensitive information about myself, and I was afraid that someone who knew me would find this site and recognize me too easily, so I had to change my sn. The whole rapunzel story fits me too - an overprotective, controlling mother, and being rescued from the tower by a prince. Rapunzel, or Rap feels like a better fit to me now than my real name, and I answer to these nicknames in real life too.

My real name fits me better than I like to admit though. Wendy means wanderer. My maiden name is Reiersen. Reiser, or å reise, means travel (in Norwegian - as the name is also). I never had a chance with a name like that, did I? I was an Air Force Brat, so never stayed anywhere long enough to put roots down.

I've been using "dexter" as an online name forever. People think it is from the cartoon "Dexter's Lab," which would actually fit me, but I had the nick long before the cartoon began.

I was teased a lot as a kid, a lot of different names used, but some kids called me "Poindexter" I guess because I was smart and wore glasses. As teasing went, Poindexter was a name I thought was kind of funny and sometimes even encouraged.

That popped into my head for some reason when I began working online. At the first Star Wars charity line for Episode One everyone referred to one another by the screen names they were using on the messageboard where the event was planned. So at that point it became a "real life" nickname officially as well.

When I went to register my own domain, dexter.com was an obvious choice, but taken (a textile firm) so I was thinking of "e-dexter" or other alternatives. Luckily someone suggested "idexter" which I liked because it isn't as cliche as "e-", I liked that it could stand for "information" as in knowledge as well as refer to information technology, and finally it is a sort of play on "I, Robot" one of my favorite books (Isaac Asimov) and favorite albums (Alan Parson Project).

And for the record, the image that "Poindexter" always conjured in my head was indeed from a cartoon... not the contemporary "Dexter" but a character from the old Felix the Cat cartoons. There was a villain named "The Professor" and in some episodes he was more of a friend to Felix than a villain, and in those he had a nephew named "Poindexter" who helped him in his lab.

That's the character that was in my mind when I decided to use "dexter" as a screen name.

That's a pretty complicated answer, dexter!

And for everyone else, I'm glad you're answering this thread. Some people's names are obvious when they're explained eg Skybdark, but for example, Nerak, I would never have said, 'Oh yes, that's "Karen" backwards!'

I'm finding this really interesting, and I hope you others are too. Please keep the replies coming!

I chose the name "inkblot" because people are so individual and different from each other, and we can all see the same picture (like an inkblot) as something different. I think psychology is fascinating! A Question

Mine's simple. I was born on a September morning, plus I used to be Neil Diamon's greatest fan. A Question

I'm also very attached to my SN. I've had it for about 6-7 years. It's like looking at my own name when someone calls me "Sept."
