I can't focus in school. I'm failing nearly every class and I feel like I'm always in a foggy state of mind. I often zone out when I try to concentrate on my schoolwork. I haven't told my parents about this because I know they would just tell me I'm being lazy and that I should try harder. They once told me they don't "believe" that mental illnesses exist. I also get extremely nervous in social situations and I'm afraid of talking to people because I feel like I'm being judged for everything. I also often get mood swings. One moment I can feel sad and tired, and then in an instant I feel very energetic and/or very angry. Also, sometimes at night I drink my parents' alcohol (without them knowing) to help me calm down because I worry a lot, especially when I try to fall asleep. I'm 14 by the way. I don't know what to do. My parents won't let me go to therapy, I've asked them before. Does anyone have advice? Is there anyway I can help myself with any of this?

Is there a counselor in the school where you go?

I just posted on your post in the introduction section. If there is a counselor in the school you go to, please reach out to him or her. Or a guidance counselor. As I mentioned in my other post, my daughter, who is now 18, struggled for many years with some similar issues as you are describing. Concentration, failing classes that she'd normally have no problems with, social anxiety. Please reach out to either a school psychologist or social worker in your school, or if you don't feel you can do that, maybe you can discuss with a school nurse or even your family doctor. They may be able to convince your parents to consider getting you a therapist.

I echo those suggestions about seeing the school guidance counsellor but will elaborate on why and what resources they have to offer. First of all they can offer compassion, understanding, and support. If you wish they can act as an intermediary with your parents. They will also be able to refer you to a school psychologist which many school boards have. If having a family doctor is a problem I've heard of some counsellors even arranging for one. The school counsellor will have additional resources - including how to access the Kids Help Line.
And your family doctor is your next best resource. I want to point out that you are old enough to make your own health decisions without your parents approval. So make an appointment. Your doctor may be able to help you or may choose to refer you to the next step which is a psychiatrist. Again, if you wish they can talk to your parents. |
