I'm in the process of applying for disability insurance, and my psychiatrist is my main Dr. filling out the paper work.

I met with him yesterday to go over what he wrote and add anything else I felt should be included. Part of it was an assessment of functioning in different physical and intellectual functions. He assessed me as having severe impairment in a lot more of the categories than I had. It was just kind of depressing knowing that's how he sees me.

But I guess it's kind of typical, I usually think I'm doing better than I am, try and do too much and wind up imploding. Plus I guess it's better for my chances of being approved.

Now I'm just going through the whole hassle of getting my medical records from all my hospitalizations which is time consuming and expensive.

I would talk to your doctor about your concerns with what he wrote. He may have just been really laying it on thick to help you get disability. yea doctors do that...

Even if you end up having more problems than you predicted, keep in mind that there's no shame in that. It's not your fault

I just went through the disability process myself. My therapist flat out said she tried to make it sound bad to increase my chances. She literally said I had the worst case of schizophrenia she has seen. But I don't believe that.

I agree that docs might inflate a patient's problems to help the person get disability. Please keep that in mind, dear one. Okay?

I agree that the answers provided above are most likely. The doctor was trying to improve your chances of receiving disability. I know the whole process is frustrating. Hang in there.

My mum works with mentally disabled people and she once told me they try to exaggarate within the limits in order to get the funding a client needs. For example, they'll write down that a client needs full-time assistance during showering. A parent will then say to my mother, "But my kid can shower by himself!" My mother would say, "If your child was in an unfamiliar bathroom by himself, would he be able to shower? No. He'd need full-time assistance. So we're writing down he needs full-time assistance while showering."

They might have done something similar in your case.
