I took the old cold air return grill off to clean when I was painting. Ooo the back of the grille was black n rusty and nasty. So I had a "brain storm" to just replace it........

Well, I guess folks can't measure right, because the landlord took the old grille in to Lowes and they didn't have the size in stock, so they had to order another one.......

Well, it still isn't the right size. But the "big question" is.. Does it matter which way the slats on the grill go.. Most, "NORMAL" grills slats go horizontal.. The new grill is not the right size so the landlords says it doesn't matter if the slats goes vertical. I said it does matter? Who is right??

I'm not sure what your concern is, but perhaps it's just what you're used to?? I have both vertical in the rooms, and horizontal at the air return itself.

I think because the grille is the wrong size and is five inches too tall to fit the way it is supposed to fit, we have to turn it sideways to make a better fit, so then the slats will go horizontal instead of vertical. Even turning it side ways, it will be two and a half inches too long on both sides....It looks ugly..

My reasoning isn't logical I guess. Like air flow goes up not sideways. But after thinking about it, I guess my thinking is pretty silly........so I guess it doesn't make a difference and I am wrong....

It is ok to laugh at my reasoning. lol.. I have had one of those days///// I think it is called a "blond moment"...

oo I forgot to thank you for the link. I like the grills without slats better.. They are pretty. lol.. You think I should maybe suggest he get one of the grilles with out slats.. hmmm .. maybe not..

I am in the same boat as you.....I took off all the old junk in my new house & want to replace it all. Looking at what they did originally I really had to laugh. In one area, they took one huge grill & cut it in two to cover 2 different holes in the ducting & return. Then I have a little 2 inch by 8 in the wall & can't fine a thing at Lowe's for that. I am going to go internet shopping when I have all the sized I need figured out. It is very entertaining to take apart old things that were thrown together. After I'm done, there isn't going to be an old anything in the house (& that is only 15 years old at that). Things in this house are actually newer than the new house I purchased in California 20 years ago. That's just a mental thing it seems. I just like everything all new & clean & fresh. Always owned new homes, (& even when they are 20 years old, I was the original owner in what is now the older home).....??????

Anyway....it's a lot of work for sure trying to find the right size anything.

But I am also like you......I have theories about air flow also....it seems that return should be horizontal because the air is coming in from the floor direction. Hot air should be aimed down since it rises & cold air should be aimed up to cool off the warm air quicker. But I do have the circular air ducts in the ceiling for both heat & cold....no choice in the direction there & no choice in the floor ducts buy I purchased the fancy victorian floor duct covers with scrolly grill work....the luvers inside I have opening toward the wall so it can bounce off & into the room instead of shooting directly into the room.....just preference there.....but actually thought out about the air flow before placing things.

Just to let you know, you aren't off base in questioning these things,
Debbie

I'm not laughing at the question ? on Cold Air Return Grille I think the force of the air handler is what makes the air flow, whether through vertical or horizontal venting ? on Cold Air Return Grille It pulls the air, air doesn't know the difference imo.
