Has anyone done the WAIS? How did you find it? I’m doing it in a couple weeks and I’m partly excited and partly terrified.

sorry but you cant find the presently used one online. but I can tell you in general what to expect...

it is a basic what do you know kind of test. you know like the ones you took in elementary school and high school. ...

they just want to know things like if you know who the president today is, if you can do math and what your math, social studies/ history, english language skills are...

if you look back at your posts here you can pretty much know you have a good grasp of the english language, writing skills, sentence structure, some of your posts may already talk about current events, who's the president, what the date is, whether you know basic spelling, whether you know how to think about things in a logical and orderly way... how fast you are at playing games and figuring out games and pictures....whether you can speak verbally or not, memorize simple every day usage words...

in other words just like those tests in elementary, jr high and high school the test is just going to tell you and the person giving you the exam what your education and all are.

this test does not tell them whether you have a mental disorder or not.

much of what they have you doing they will already know what your skills are just from talking to you. I mean they know from how you answer their questions up to now whether you can verbally speak or not, use correct language structure, think logically..

my suggestion just take your time and be honest because they will already know what you can and cant do, how you talk, what vocabulary you regularly use what games you have told them you play whether you can work a computer and read and write and all that.

I’m doing it as an opportunity through school. I know I can’t study for it and it basically assesses general knowledge. I know what each of the subtests consists of as well.

I’m scared because I don’t want to look like a complete idiot in front of him. I think he thinks I’m a lot smarter than I am. I’m also nervous about dumb things, like can I bring a coffee into the test environment with me? I’m going to ask him when I see him on Tuesday because that is actually really making me nervous - just not knowing the “rules”.

And, did I mention I don’t want to look super dumb? He’s my therapist. He’s my prof. I want him to think highly of me but I can’t make up what I don’t know in this.

A test like that does sound nerve wrecking. I would be nervous too. Water is typically allowed to be brought into most places (except airports, concerts and other ticket admitting venues). What is a WAIS test used for? I have taken a cognitive learning ability test, which was able to help me identify my learning strengths and weakness and track my progress. Is this a test that could be taken again expecting different results? My IQ must improve(I hope), although I feel that my EQ has remained only stable

AB2371 it’s the Weschler Adult Intelligence Scale. It takes about two hours to administer. There are something like 15 tests and they increase in difficulty as you succeed in each one. The teat itself is used to assess knowledge, or as is commonly said, determine IQ. If you are an adult the theory is that your IQ is generally stable, so improving your IQ so to speak might not even be possible. I don’t know about test-retest reliability - I haven’t looked into that.

ummm it is possible to improve your IQ as adults. millions of adults do this every day...

example

college students are improving their IQ by taking classes at a college facility
non english speaking adults improve their IO by learning to speak, read and write in english
many people that I know are improving their comprehension IQ scores by opening a dictionary and picking one new word to learn how to spell and use each day...

learning (a persons intelligence Quotent/ how much they know) only stops if a person does not put forth the effort to learn new things.

which is pretty much impossible considering we are now in the computer age where things are constantly needing to be learned by adults and children alike.

you are an adult right... think about something that someone has told you recently that you did not know about before that you know about.... that right there has improved how much you knew (improved your IQ)

my point is human beings add to their knowledge every day so their IQ improves every day.

heres a suggestion when you go into your test come out of it not the least bit curious on teaching yourself to do something that you could not do on the test.... most people that I know that take that test come out of it with "I did pretty good but I couldnt do the .... "Im going to study up on that so next time I can do that"

the water problem ... sometimes they dont allow water in because it can be a distraction, most times the person is so busy doing the test that theres no time for "wait a minute I need a drink" the tests are geared in a way that they cant allow you time to study up or take a break. its a fast moving kind of test where there's an order of how they do it and many of the tests are stop watch timed.

my suggestion is do the necessary bathroom, eat and drink before the test. that way you wont be distracted during the testing and you wontbe getting dehydrated during the test.

and of course ask before taking a drink with you that way you will be sure one way or the other.

I can tell you when I took my test there was no time for drink. just as fast as one test ended another began. when I did ask for a break I was told no because one of the things this test looks at is how a person transitions from one activity to another.

I did email him tonight to ask about the coffee. I may have to take a bathroom break for medical reasons. If I stand up and bold for the door, we’re taking a break. I know if I haven’t had breakfast he’ll turn me around and send me home.

I dont see you having a problem with crying while doing the WAIS, its not the kind of test that you will be going into great detail about triggering things...

unless things like adding, subtracting, dividing, multiplying, repeating 5 unrelated words back to him, answering questions like who is the president, how many states are there in the USA, make this pattern with these blocks, spell 3 letter, 4 letter and 5 letter words, read this sentence, point to the picture of an elephant, point to the picture that means happy....... are things that make you cry,

I actually had a lot of fun doing the test. my favorite was the building blocks (make this shape you see on this page using these blocks), peg board (hop these pegs to leave only one peg left games in different shaped peg boards)

can it be that maybe he was joking about making you cry?

I made the comment about crying. He laughed at it but I was serious.

I am only concerned about crying because when I get frustrated, the first thing I do is cry. I am afraid of getting frustrated or feeling stupid and then crying.

I see. as far as my going through the test there wasnt a lot of frustration. the test is set up in a way that you are supposed to eventually reach your educational limit...

im wondering if you are working yourself up. you know expecting the worst to happen when in actuality its not going to be that bad.

the test is set up in a way that it goes so fast from one activity and subject to another that you most likely wont have a chance to get frustrated over not being able to get it right. you are not supposed to get every question right? why because you are not a programmed computer that knows everything in the universe and beyond. some of the questions you will not know the answers to and depending on what your school levels you attended you are not supposed to know the answers to. like my examiner told me "you didnt take college level physics class so you are supposed to get some of these wrong, just do your best and lets see what your science abilities are " my science level was 10th grade, so what I wasnt and am not a rocket scientist or engineer.

my point is you are not supposed to be able to answer and do everything. you are not supposed to get 100% for a grade on this. Each test looks at something different and when you get between 3-5 wrong that test section is completed. if you are not a doctor you are not going to know much about this and if you have never taken that course you wont know the answers to this or that.

its just a test that will tell you what you know and what you dont know. and if you want to improve and learn more you can go back to school or self study on your own kind of test. you already know you are not the lowest IQ of for example mental retardation. and you already know you are not a know everything in the universe genius, so now just go into the test with lets see where I am in this world of average and have fun doing some of the activities. breath relax and have some fun learning more about yourself and what you already know from going through school and from what you have learned in other ways.
