Hi Friends,

I didn't know dogs could get bronchitis. My big Great Dane mix, Sargent, started coughing last night. The vet said to give him children's cough medicine, and bring him in today. He diagnosed him with bronchitis. Sargent is such a sweet, gentle and loyal "puppy".

Has anyone else had a dog who got bronchitis?

EJ

people are amazed that cats and dog can get just about anything humans can. although theyre not exactly the same illness. take for example a growing epidemic in the cat population: chlamydia. Its not an STD like in humans and doesnt have the same effect. In cats it can lay dormant and then show itself when the cat gets sick or if the cat's immune system is low and usually rears its ugly head as an upper respiratory infection or some other illness like that.

im sorry your doggy is sick. some antibiotics should do the trick. make sure your vet does some kind of culture or test to make sure. my cat was being treated for an upper respiratory infection when she really had sinusitis. and all it took was a culture. plus its much more exapsnive in the long run if they just quickly brush over the symptoms. hopefully your vet truly cares about your pup.

good luck.

((((((( HUGS ))))))) You & Sargent ((((((( HUGS )))))))

I went thru this with my miniature Chihuahua - she only weighed 5 pounds and she had bronchitis then it turned into pneumonia (I was so scared) - it took us a month and a half and many Vet visits to get her feeling better - so please make sure you keep your dog warm and out of the way of any cool breeze that may move thru the house.

Oh, dear! Hope he does okay. Did you have/did he like the children's cough medicine? What flavor did you get him? LOL

Salukigirl,

My husband took Sargent to our vet. I don't think he did a culture, but I think he is a really good vet. We have lived in many places over our 35 year marriage, and the Good Lord has always blessed us with good vets.

The vet gave Sargent some shots, and sent home some medication as well. He is much improved already.

Bebop, thank you for the good wishes.

Rhapsody,

Thank you for all the hugs, and sharing your story.

Sargent is 138 pounds. I just purchased some extra area rugs last week. The upstairs is wall-to-wall carpet, but since we spend most of our time downstairs -- the "puppies" stay down here more too.

Hugs,

Hi Perna,

Husband went to the store and picked up some cherry-flavored children's cough medicine.

We didn't get to give Sargent some of it until this morning. He was lying down last night, and didn't sit up until this morning. Most of it went on the floor -- LOL. When he was out back this morning with one of our St. Bernards, Molly, she was sniffing his mouth, like "What did they try to give you? Are you OK?". My dog has bronchitis

Thanks for your concern,

EJ

Hi EJ, I had a big lab mix that I had to give a baby aspirin to every day. It helped with the inflammation in his joints. He was the worlds best dog! Loyal, smart, well behaved...he was my best friend.

I am glad Sargent is getting the meds he needs to feel better. It sounds like you are taking good care of him. I wish him a speedy recovery.

I'm sorry to hear about your dog. My dog, a mutt, has chronic allergic bronchitis. She's just starting back up with coughing again. It's so hard to listen to, and it's very apparent she doesn't feel good. The only thing that's kicked the symptoms completely is prednisone, but she has a liver mass that grows when she's on steroids. They haven't been able to identify what it is via needle aspirations, so we're trying to keep her okay without the steroids. But she takes an antihistamine, a bronchodialotor, and codeine as needed when her cough gets bad. We're also doing allergy shots for her identified allergy to dust mites.

I hope your dog's bronchitis is acute and not a long term thing. Poor babies. It's hard to see them sick.

take care,

gg

EJ,

Your poor puppy.....hope the bronchitis gets better soon......just watch out if it turns into larangitis & looses the bark,,,,lol. I have several of my doggies that have had that happen however & it's the funniest sound....they sound as if they have been debarked

Take care of Sargent......don't get him addicted to the cough med.....lol. You know how that alchohol can be...lol.

Hugz to Sargent,
Debbie

LOL, I actually wonder sometimes if my dog gets "addicted" to the codeine. Sometimes it almost seems as if she's faking or exaggerating the cough until she gets a dose. When we started giving her half or even a quarter tablet, that seemed to go away. My dog has bronchitis

How's the pooch now?

Oh, dogs are smart. My dog has bronchitis Mine learned very early that if he faked puking I let him right out the door. I learned quickly also though, and told him to go ahead and get sick on the rug My dog has bronchitis He stopped that behavior.

Yes, how will we know when Sargeant is "better" and over his "bronchitis"?
