It was intersting and obvious to me how my pets were behaving after the death of my mother. They all clustered around me, wanting to be ON me! The yellow coon cat, who just peed on my clothes and about whom I just posted in a separate thread wanted to be with Mom ALL the time. He wanted to be on her bed or near her and he even aggravated her, keeping her awake at night.
My old kitty...a stray, who has been with me longer than any of my other pets, DEMANDED to be on top of me for several days!
I think pets are much more sensitve to such things than we can percieve or give them credit for.

I think change is hard for all living beings.

pets seem to know/sense death. there was a show early this year about a cat in a nursing home that would only visit people he knew would be dying like that night. he would stay with them til the end then leave the room. they sense us needing them too.

At one point I had 4 cats. A few days before the 1st (Kittie) died (we knew it was going to happen) she was sitting between us. During that time each of the other 3 came up on the couch and licked her head and snuggled her.
The 4 always got along but until that time they had never shown that kind of affection to each other.
Kittie was the alpha cat. These was a chair she liked to sit in. If one of the others was up there and she jumped onto the chair, the other would get off...no confrontation.
After Kittie died, they sat looking at that chair and refused to go on it.
All 4 always knew when I was not feeling well and would snuggle in.

So right! Hubby got taken to the hospital tonight and both my dog and cat are driving me nuts. The dog is in my face and the cat wants in and out, in and out, almost constantly.

I laid down for a while and the cat, who knows better than to get ON me, tried to lay on my chest. He finally settled for laying his head on my shoulder while the dog came and laid next to my bed.

It takes me a while to give in and allow them to comfort me. I've always toughed things out by myself.

Yes, my cat knows when I am not feeling well. I am sorry you are struggling with this Patty. I'll send some positive thoughts your way.

I am sorry about the loss of your mother.

I agree that animals can sense things and can mourn too. I hope you find comfort in your animals. My pets and the death of my mother.....

Thanks, dear friends,
Yes, my pets are a comfort to me, and a lot of company.

I am feeling my mother's absence particularly right now, maybe because of the Christmas season. I find myself thinking how I should call her, etc. For the most part, though, I am glad to have had the time with her and we finally shared some loving thoughts for each other.

Love to you all.
Patty
