We are having a snowstorm currently and the roads have become very dangerous to travel. I was able to freeze the pork roast I was planning to serve the crowd of family due over and now have some extra time on my hands, rare and appreciated to be sure!

But as I sit here with my plate of sauerkraut and some pork sausage, eaten to secure good luck in the coming year (or so I'm told New Year's traditions?), I wondered if there are other traditions out there that I don't know about.

My MIL told me of the eating pork & sauerkraut=good luck tradition. Who knew New Year's traditions? Anybody else have some New Year's tradition they follow and care to share?

Happy New Year to all... with or without, the eating of the pork & sauerkraut New Year's traditions?!

Ah, Pennsylvania Dutch/New York traditions! I'm in the South so lots of people do the black eye pea route:

It is interesting to read and hear of the different traditions around here and the globe.

Take care everyone!

My mom and I had a tradition.... prepare a full on turkey dinner for my brother and his friends on New Years day. My mother loved those boys as her own and she made the day very festive and fun and all about them and their favourite foods.

Only problem.... they were usually pretty hungover from too much partying the night before. Not many appetites in the room though willing spirits all around. They loved my mother just as much as she loved them and so they forced themselves to eat all the goodies put in front of them. It was sometimes painful to watch. They always did the clean up too. That was probably the best part of the tradition. Everyone gathered in the kitchen while all the guys did the dishes. My mom would get so much joy from the house full of talk and laughter. She'd grin from ear to ear all evening long. They'd bring her gifts and shower here with love.

They'd take left overs home with them and anticipate the next year's gathering at my mother's house.... hangovers and all.

My mom has since passed on but the memory of those days sticks with all of us. My brother's daughter has now picked up the tradition and she now gathers my brother's friends together with her own for a festive day of feasting and laughter.

Have a wonderful day everyone..... the start of new beginnings.

I've never had a tradition on New Year's day. I usually take down Christmas decorations, which is what I'm taking a break from. New Year's traditions?

We usually take down the Christmas tree, wrap up all the ornaments and decorations, and do some general house cleaning. I did the house cleaning thing yesterday, but skipped the tree.

I spent New Year's in Denmark once and the New Year's eve dinner was a white fish (cod?) in a white sauce. I was told it is very traditional and followed in almost all Danish homes.
