Ok, so I went home on my lunch break, and I was driving past the elementary school next to our home. The kids were out playing. I saw one little kid getting kicked by three other kids. I pulled my car over, and just yelled over the fence "stop!" The other kids ran away and the kid who was hurt just stood up, he kinda looked embarrassed.
Did I help any? Or just make it worse? I wish there was more I could do. I looked around for the adults but I couldn't see anyone. I was running late so I had to leave. I just feel so bad for that little boy. He was probably only about 7 or 8 years old. Poor thing! |

I would have been glad for someone to stop the bullies when I was in a situation like that.

You did a good thing, Razzle! But it saddens me to hear of such bullying! Was this at a school playground, during school hours? If so, there should have been adult teachers supervising. If that is the case, you should call the school and speak to the principal about what you witnessed, and what you did! The administration should know of things like this going on, and they were lax and even at fault if no adult was out there supervising. I teach, and we must always be watchful and "on duty" during playground activities.
Of course, if this was at a public playground in off hours, then you did the only thing that can be done. Patty P.S....OH, I see it was at an elementary school. Is school in session there or on some kind of break. If school is in session, then you should definitely call the school. |

You did good! I think a tv show (like 20/20 or 60 minutes) just did an episode on adults that didn't stop to help, and those who did and why..and what circumstances they were most likely to step in and help... all in all, there were far too many people who allowed the bullies to continue. This idea of don't get involved is garbage, in my opinion. Here in the USA it took all of us to become involved to make a better country. That we have so many people/residents now, from third world countries where if they spoke up they might die, and so they learn to be "blind", is hurting our society. We all need to stand up, especially for the children, and be good examples of the caring society we insist of which we are.

It was an elementary school, during school hours, but they were on their lunch / recess break. The kid was close to the fence that runs along the road - for me to actually get in there I would have had to drive around to the front on the other side (or jump the fence...) I didn't see any adults within eyesight, but they probably were closer to the building. It's a fairly big soccer field / playground area.
I just hope that kid doesn't get beat up every day. Everyone else was playing, the kid was in plain sight, but nobody seemed to care. It's so sad. |

Okay, after this I'll stop the rant, but the more I think about this the angrier I become. Schools are supposed to provide a safe environment for young ones. Teachers are always, ALWAYS, required to be on duty during playground activiities. The administration definitely needs to be contacted about this. Let them hear the word "lawsuit" for being lax in supervision and they'll step up their watchfulness of bullying. Schools hate to get entangled in lawsuits....believe me, I know! There are always two of us teachers supervising playground activities, and if a kid even gets knocked down accidentally, much less ruffed up in innocent play, we are in the office reporting it, with the offender(s) as well as the victim. There is no excuse for allowing three kids to be kicking one child! It definitely needs to be reported along with the strong question to the administrator of WHO is supervising the kids during playground activity. If I were the parent of such a child who was being bullied, I'd be in there in a flash threatening lawsuit ....just to get some supervision!

Razzle, It doesn't matter how big the field is. The school is responsible! We take kids out on a big, big field when weather permits. We, as adults, (and these are rowdy middle schoolers), are still responsible...legally responsible!

(((Razzleberry))) you did a great deed today, the kid may have been embarrassed at that moment, but you have given him a model for kindness that he can follow as an adult, and given him further hope that there is indeed good in the world. One day, years from now when he saves someone else from the same fate, he will be thinking of that act of mercy from a kindly lady whose name he may never know.
By doing good you inspire good deeds in others. TJ |

((((((((Razzleberry))))))))))) you did a good job. If you want to help more, I'd suggest going into the school and reporting what you saw... since hopefully they're at least aware of the situation and will put an end to it.
