I don't know what forum to put this in. Didn't seem right for the eating disorders forum. I even considered the SI forum, because it seems to be a way of hurting myself sometimes. Anyway...

Ok so all my life I have heard about comfort food, and it's not something I ever really got into. The past year, I've been really big on eating chocolate ice cream when I'm in crisis-- and I've found it actually does help! I slow down and calm down, and I feel better. But it's a terrible habit. I'm already overweight! Comfort food Comfort food

Still, I honestly feel better after I eat some chocolate ice cream.

Anybody else do the same thing?

Angela:

That is a major problem for me. I have lots of comfort foods and they are all fattening. I am also overweight, so it can be a problem.

One of my favorites is Cheddar Peppers with ranch dressing. MMMMM...had some last night after visiting the hospital. Ofcourse, my poor gums were too sore so I could only eat one. Actually, I think this is my first post since I had dental surgery. Been in alot of pain and then stomach pain and fever landed me in ER, which is a definite crisis for me. Just had to stop and get some cheddar peppers.

Ok I'm done rambling...but you're definitely not alone on this one.

Take Care.

You are not alone, I am another comfort eater. I have many different foods, but it really doesn't matter what I eat, its just eating that helps me (so I think) . It really hasn't done anything for me except gain weight. I have gain weight that has caused me to be depressed because I don't like the way I look. It's such a crazy cycle, on feeds on another... It's a known fact that chocolate is soothing. Some of us here, in fact, MANY of us here prefer our chocolate straight, though, in the form of Hershey bars or Caramelos. Comfort food

Anything that I can eat like fries or small finger food is comfort food for me. There's something about taking a little piece and bringing it to my mouth that is comforting. If and when I can, I go to Wendy's and get a large order of fries with their chocolate malt. YUMMM! If I need comfort food in a BIG way, I'll make a pot of Mexican meat ball soup! The whole house smells like my mom, then. Comfort food

Sorry GG....what in the world is hotdog pie????

Comfort food for me has to come from childhood...old fashioned mac and cheese, homemade applesauce with loads of cinnamon and raisens, Cambell's Tomato Soup and grilled cheese sandwiches, pancakes with real maple syrup and gobs of butter, ...I could go on, but I think I'll go make breakfast.

Sweets, my comfort foods are many. The main one is probably ice cream. Blue Bell homemade vanilla with walnuts and hot butterscotch topping. Comfort food Another big one is homemade hot rolls with butter Comfort food. I make those a lot. When I was a teenager and suffered from really severe cramps, my mother would make me french fries...I always felt better then. Comfort foodDark chocolate is also something that I sneak Comfort food when I'm feeling low..then the sneaking makes me feel guilty. Comfort foodI live alone.....I haven't figured out who I'm sneaking around from???? Comfort food (I'm making hot rolls today as my little patient needs to gain some more weight. Otherwise she's going to be put in the hosp with a stomach tube Comfort food and I'll throw myself in front of the doctor Comfort food train before that happens.)

Wow! Sounds like a LOT of us do this, eh?!

I didn't notice any men on here, though (unless I just misssed someone). I have noticed that women tend to claim using comfort food more. Anyone have a theory on why that is?

Okay, sigh. It is from childhood. It was a war recipe from my Gramma.

You take hotdog slices, potato slices, and onion slices and layer them in a pie crust until it's full. Then you bake it for however long...have to look it up...When you take it out, you cut a hole in the top of the crust and pour in a quarter cup cream. This makes a creamy sauce for the insides. It's yummalicious with ketchup.

I think I'll make it tonight.

I have many comfort foods. Thankfully my mom made one of them tonight...Mashed Potatoes and gravy. Lets see some of my other ones are nachos, Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, Hotdogs on hotdog buns, T.V. Dinners,Cake with buttercream frosting, and chocolate chip cookie dough icecream.

Wow, I've never heard of hotdog pie. Frito pie, but not this. I think my little patient would like it. And the cream would add more calories.....GG, you're inspired! Pat

Thanks, but it was my Gramma's idea. How she fed a family of seven on it is beyond me, though. Unless she made two. It is yummy.

It had been ages since I had a Wendy's frosty and french fries. When I was at the courthouse for the TRO, we had to stick around till after lunch so Jerry made a quick run to Wendy's since it's close to the courthouse and got me some french fries and a chocolate frosty! YUM!!!

HOT DOG PIE!? Sounds good! Can't remember who posted that recipe now, but would you tell us how long to bake it and at what temperature? Do you put it into the oven dry... I mean ... no juices for it to cook in? Maybe I'm being thick, but it sure is tempting to make! Comfort food

Hey everyone has comfort foods! That inlcudes my male T!
Mine? Spaghettini bolognase. OR pizza and salad. I have to opt for the spaghetti usually though, because of my TMD... but hey, I can swallow any food!

These comfort foods are called that for just that reason: they do comfort us. Often they remind us of a time when we were being cared for, and felt secure and safe. (If even just for that moment.)

(PS I don't eat hot dogs: the nitrites and nitrates are what they use to make the tumors grow in the lab rats so they can practice medicines on them. Sorry... I don't eat processed meats for the same reason. I think they should be outlawed. ))

Okay, you layer the hot dog slices, potato slices, and onion slices and add a little salt and pepper to taste between each layer of three. You put the top crust on. Do not vent it. Bake at 425 for 15 minutes and then lower oven to 350 for 30 minutes. When you take it out...here comes my absolute favorite part...you cut a small circle out of the top and pour in the 1/4 cup of cream or half and half. And then of course you fight over who gets to eat that circle of crust...Yummy! Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes and then it's done.

My mom used to make this when I was a kid -- a long, long time ago. Haven't thought of it for years. It's kind of like scalloped potatoes with hotdogs for the "grease" instead of butter betw. the layers.
