I had an incredibly depressing experience today.

I had to go do a couple loads of laundry, and I had to break a 10. Convenience store and laundromat are across the parking lot from each other. So I went and bought a granola bar to break the 10.

The (very cute, VERY young, like, this-is-my-very-first-job young) girl at the register gave me change for a 20, which I didn't realize till I went to put it in my pocket. So I stuck my head around the register, in front of the person being helped (sorry, rude, didn't want to wait, though ;-)) and said "I only gave you a 10," and handed her back the extra change.

She was very appreciative, but there were AUDIBLE "wows" in the very long line behind me, and one woman said, "That was really nice."

GEEEZE. Are honesty and integrity that unexpected anymore?? Sure, I could use an extra $10, but I also have to live with myself.

How fricking depressing that something that should be automatic gets so widely applauded instead.

what a world we live in....

Candy, IDK the age of those behind you in line, but remember that Civics hasn't been taught in the schools for a very long time. There is no one (but the Scouts, 4 H, Y etc) teaching how to do the right thing.

Oh boy... that is kinda sad!

I know some people who would do the same thing you've done (I've done it in the past)... but others, not a chance!

Good job setting a good example though. what a world we live in....

Sad world, but a good thing that you did. Reminds me of last night. I bought a lot of stuff at Ikea, including this plant (kind of a tree b/c it is very tall). It was too heavy for me to take out of the cart again so I left it in there. The cashier didn't even see it. He told me the total of my purchase and I reminded him to ring up the plant. He looked at me with appreciation. I like to be honest.

Hi candybear, I like to think we can change the world for the better. It is done one moment at a time. You just influenced several people to do the right thing. Maybe next time it will be them in your shoes and they will think of you and give back the incorrect change. Good job!

You did the right thing, and I'd hope each and everyone of us would do the same thing!

I wonder though, why this would make you call it a "terribly depressing experience?" Why not feel great that you had an opportunity to do this, and that so many noticed!? what a world we live in....

It makes me sad that it got such a huge, positive reaction. From where I sit, it shouldn't have gotten ANY reaction. Any one of those people in line should have had the decency (or whatever you want to call it) to do the same thing. That it was seen as an anomaly instead of no big deal just makes me sad. what a world we live in....

I don't think that the correct behavior is learned in school, it's learned at home. You did the right thing, maybe you taught someone in line a lesson in behavior.

I learned all the bad things IN SCHOOL and all the good things I learned at home when I was young.

Just for the record, I think you're awesome, candybear!
