I am starting doctoral school during the last week of August. Yesterday, I received a big envelope from my school. It was a notice telling me of my assignments ot be completed prior the first class. I have homework! Then it listed the four textbooks that I will need, that can be purchased outside of the school bookstore. THEN, on the bottom it says, "an additional two textbooks will be required. one of them will be available from your professor on the first class. the other is custom made and will be available in the school bookstore."

Custom made?

Will it have my portrait inside? Six textbooks for one semester??

Then they sent along a big journal article on the effectiveness of psychological assessments. I am supposed to read that, plus a bunch of chapters from the books, prior to the first class.

I have homework! I have homework! I have homework!

What did I get myself into?? lol

That sounds like a lot of work to have before you even have a class.

Yes, sounds about right. Good wishes! (Oh, those books are not cheap! Do try to find used texts without too much underlining in them.)

I liked my "custom" made textbook for my grad course of study (which was a new program both for the school and the "world") as it was about the development of the course to that point, written when it was only 2-3 years old, how it was created, rationale behind it, etc. It was quite interesting (but this was in a distance education program).

But I think if they have a lot of experts at your school, their writing a text is more interesting as you get to see individual interests, etc. You obviously haven't had many history courses :-) always at least 4 or more books. I like lots of books/articles as they give a better overall picture for me and I understand better in the end although at first it's more confusing for me until I begin to "get it" and relax some. Order out of chaos I have homework!
