I was in a car accident this morning. I rear ended a guy pretty hard. I'm not even sure what happened - I think my foot slipped off the break onto the accelerator. I'm really shaken up.

I still have to go the collision reporting center after work today. I'm really scared that because it was my fault and the guy was stopped at a light that I'll get charged with something like careless driving.

Fortunately there's almost no damage to my car, just the licence plate is bent in half, but his car's back end basically crumpled up.

I think I still have one at fault accident on my insurance, because I have a clean record for 8 years, but I'm still worried my rates could go up.

I know how scary that is! I am just so glad that you are ok and that the other person is ok. They call them "accidents" for a reason, so try not to worry too terrible much. I'm glad you're safe.

Oh, pretty sure your rates will go up... IDK about the time limit if there is any on that (between accidents.) If you already went through a course to avoid points (for the other accident) then I doubt you can do that again, but maybe?

Take care of yourself right now. You made a mistake, and no one was badly hurt, though I would garner a guess that the person you hit has whiplash if you going fast or not breaking. That rear-ending hurts a person. But it could have been worse and it wasn't!

Breathe. You will get through this. It might be difficult, but you can do it.

At least you are safe, material things can always be repaired/fixed. I hope everything goes ok, and isn't too stressful for you!

I'm so sorry to hear about your accident. I'm glad that neither one of you were seriously injured....that is a blessing!

I do hope that you will not see a rise in your insurance rates or receive a citation. But even if these things happen hon, in the grand scheme of things...it could be worse. You WILL get through this .... like others said....take some breathes and try as best you can to find a way to calm.

Take good care hon!

((((((((Split)))))))I'm so sorry that happened. Its a scary thing to happen. Months back i got rear ended and pushed into another car. Both cars took off and left me there. Some witness called the police and i got a ticket for careless driving when it wasnt even my fault. He told me he saw no damage to my rear end only to the front. So he took it as i rammed them. But if the police didnt come out to the scene and ya'll only exchanged info, you should be fine and not get ticketed.

Luckily, my insurance did not go up because of it. So i'm keeping my fingers crossed yours doesnt either. I really dont see why it would though, with the clean driving record you have for the past 8 years.

I hope you calmed down from the accident.

Is the collision reporting place where you take your vehicle so your insurance can view the damage? If so, they wont ticket you either. They'll just write down what damage you have. Let them know everything you want fixed. they will probably look under the hood and under the car to check for damage we cant see on the outside.

Everything will be okay though. Happens to millions of people each day. Heck i gotta go drive today and i only have front brakes, no rear. Scary as hell driving that way.

Thanks everyone. Things at the collision reporting centre went ok - at least they're set up to be efficient.

Chalmette - the collision reporting centre is run by the police. The way it works here is police won't come to an accident unless it's really bad or people are hurt, instead you have 24 hours to go to a centre and file a report to the police. They also give you a preliminary damage estimate and have insurance adjusters on-site so you can do everything at once.

A friend of mine had a similar experience and the police showed up at her house 10 days later to charge her with careless driving. That's what I'm most worried about. I have rear ended people before, and not been charged so I don't know what the criteria are. If I do get charged, I'll plead not -guilty and then have to go to court and hopefully get it bargained down to something less serious.

I realize and am really grateful that nobody was hurt - I just don't want the hassle of dealing with police and courts.
