Where I work set up Mock Voting for students grades 3-12. To help with awareness. Hopefully some of the seniors will actually vote!

As citizens it is our duty to vote, it is part of the social contract. Just remember a lot of blood has been spilled to make sure we all have this thing called representative government. Let us all be heard, let us not let the sacrifice of others be wasted by our refusal to to voice how we think and feel at the ballot. I urge all of you, whatever your disposition, Republican, Democrat, Independent, step up.
Another important thing to rememeber. When Iraq held its first democratic election in many years, almost 80 percent of the eligible population turned out to vote despite the uncertainty of how balloting could work and the threat of terrorism. Same with Afghanistan. We who have this form of government for over 200 years can do just as well! Whoever you support, go and vote, please. I will be headed to the polls this weekend to cast my early vote! |

Please educate yourself on the issues on the ballot before going to vote. Not only are the 13 candidates listed, but other issues as well usually. State and County issues you should be aware of...probably through your local voting registration office or even newspaper will list them. It's not good to be unaware of all the things they are asking your opinion about!

Yes, a good reminder of a very important responsibility...
To quote Bill Maher, " We have a Bill of Rights. What we need is a Bill of Responsibilities." Others have pointed out that voting is not a privilege given to only a few. It is a gift given to us by the generation that fought and died for this gift... I do want to add that a pet peeve of mine are those who grumble after the election about what is happening to this country--when pressed, the excuses for not voting are outlandish. After the election, we still have phones, emails, and snail mail to let our elected officials know our views. It won't get them out of office, but it sure lets them know our opinions. Keep the pressure on with respect and dignity, and they will hear you. Don't waste your vote; please become aware of the issues on a local and national level. Not voting because you don't like the age/gender/race, or any other superficial reason , of the candidates is childish... Inform yourself. There are no guarantees, but you have still made your voice heard. |

I want to vote, but how do you become educated about the issues.
With all the anxiety I have been going through, I need something that I can understand easily. Does anyone know of any sites that are easy to read and understand? |

Most states have a web site that will explain the measures on the ballot. In California, we have the Secretary of State's website, which has a voter information guide. This guide is also mailed out to all the voters. Every proposition on the ballot will have its text printed, a general analysis, and pro and con arguments. There are also rebuttals to the pro and con arguments. We have twelve propositions this year. I have made my mind up for all the candidates, but I am having some trouble deciding on some of the measures. For this reason I will not vote early. I have an absentee ballot, but I can walk it in to the polling place on election day if necessary.
As for candidates, most of them have their own web sites. Make sure you look at candidates on both sides of the political spectrum. Failure to do that makes you an uninformed voter. There are too many critical issues for that. bfG |
