I saw my pdoc today and he wants me to do a short-term residential program through our county's mental health group. All I really know about it is that it's 5 - 14 days in duration depending on your needs, and it's a way to manage mental health crisis without being completely inpatient.

There are various groups, including a crisis DBT one, and you supposedly see a therapist every day. I had a crisis interview today and they are open to admitting me to the program when I'm ready.

Has anyone been through a program like this? Can you share your experiences? I'm definitely in crisis mode, missing another day of work today, and I definitely need major help. Thanks.

Hi Shmooey!

I have been to our CRU only once. (Crisis Residential Unit). I'm usually in the actual hospital. Its like being on the psych unit without the locked ward and it's much more calmer and relaxing (in my opinion). I found it very soothing and very helpful to return back to what I call normal. I hope that you get better soon!

I spent nine months in residential. Was kicked out for trying to kill myself. It didn't help me any, although it did get me started on EMDR which is now helping me a little bit.

Now I go to that same residential for a week every few weeks and I have four hours of EMDR therapy a day. In order to tackle the trauma more quickly.

I was inpatient for 30 days, but it was because I was suicidal. I saw my pdoc and social worker everyday. There were groups, but we weren't required to attend any of them. I spent most of my time in my room or in the dining area doing puzzles. I did undergo ECT to get me out of that depressive episode.
I did have 4 weeks in the partial hospitalization program where I did CBT and DBT that I found very helpful.

Hi, just curious how effective is EMDR?

It depends on the place largely. The local places in my town are not very compassionate or helpful so I stay away, but there is a great hospital in the next town that also has after care, and it is almost like a spa retreat, so attentive and restorative. The staff are there always to listen. There was a full intake of 75 minutes, daily contact with the doctors for full therapy sessions, well-run groups, helpful activities such as relaxation and art therapy so it was a great experience.

I know. Even the food was good. And it wasn't a locked unit even if you were admitted for suicidal thinking. And I am on disability so they took Medicare. Spent not a penny. Any time I get out of sorts I consider it as an option. I wish other hospitals would learn from their model since it really is possible and is also cost effective since that kind of treatment is more likely to do enough good that the person does not need further hospitalization.

Do you mind revealing where this is? Maybe even in a PM? If it's close to me it would be nice to have the option to go there.

I'm in California, about 1 1/2 hours south of San Francisco in a surfing/university town called Santa Cruz. The hospital is in Monterey, about 45 minutes south. It is called the Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula ( CHOMP) and the psych unit is called the Garden Pavillion. They are fantastic. I've been many times over the years and even when staff changes the quality of care and procedures do not.
