Anyone ever been in one? I have an intake appointment with a program at my clinic Wednesday. It's 3-5 days a week. I've never been involved with one before so I don't really know what to expect.

Hello Blue_Bird: Yes, the Skeezyks participated in a "partial hospital program" a few years ago. It was full-time 5 days per week. Most of the day was spent sitting in classes & discussion groups. There was a group therapy session each day. And each of the participants was assigned a counselor with whom we met a few times a week. (Mine was part-time. So I think I saw her less than others saw theirs.) Oh... & then there was a psychiatrist who met with us once a week, as I recall. I don't know as I really learned anything new & different. But it gave me something to do after having just been released from the hospital.

One thing they did that just pissed me off to no end was that they had me complete an MMPI. But then they never reviewed the results with me. They just stuck it in my file (presumably) & that was the end of that. When I complained (which I did) they said... well... sometimes it's of use to the psychiatrist. I'm quite certain my pdoc never saw it... & probably couldn't have cared less... I'm quite sure they did it simply because they knew my health insurer would pay for it...

Anyway, good luck with your program!

I've been in a few day treatment programs. The one's that were best were put on my psych hospital, as post discharge treatment and just had me going in for a couple or three groups a day.

The worst one was at another hospital and was 5 days a week for 3 weeks, but there were hour breaks between sessions which was just wasted time in my opinion. The sessions were ok, but all the free time was really boring.

Yes. After my discharge from residential treatment (9 months, weekend leave every weekend) for youths, I spent about 3 months in day treatment at the same facility. It was fairly useless. I'd arrive at 8.00, have a cup of tea, walk to the school that was on the grounds that started at 8.30, have school until 14.00, walk back, go to my room (I was the only day patient that had a bedroom, as I really needed a place to 'calm down') to rest. At 15.00 there was tea time, after everyone had finished their tea we all discussed our 'week goal'. Then I usually spent time reading or talking to the other youths. I'd go home at 16.30.
Once a week I'd see my individual T and I saw my pdoc regularly (once a week or every other week, I think. That was unusual - most only saw him once a month).

I think it can be really useful if you have group therapy and stuff, but this was mostly going to school and resting.

Residential was the same, by the way - my facility actually had 2 groups (or programs, or whatever you call it), group A, one of 9 persons in day treatment and group B, one of 7-9 persons in residential and 0-2 persons in day treatment (so both had 9 persons). Usually when you left residential and continued day treatment you went to group A, but I was one of those that stayed in group B.
Anyway, residential also didn't have group therapies besides discussing your weekly goal every day, but if you needed help during the evenings and such you could just go downstairs and ask the nurses.
The school vacations were actually the most useful - then we did have group therapies and workshops.

Good news, my medicaid covers transportation to this so I'm covered as far as that goes. Will update with how things go next week

I'm glad transportation is covered. I hope that (short-term) you get the support you need to get through this and (long-term) that you get the 'tools' you need to grow from this.
Thanks for this!

I'm glad things are working out for you Blue_bird! Day Treatment was one of the best decisions I made in my life. It got me on the road to recovery and honestly made me a much more productive person. I have recommended it to so many people and actually know a few who went to the same place and came out just as thrilled as I was. I was placed inpatient one time after that program ended, and I had no one to call, so I called my counselor from there. And she called back! I was surprised. You will learn all kinds of good skills and healthy coping techniques from the program, and I would suggest putting your all into it because its such a valuable opportunity and can literally give you life when you have run out of it. I'm glad you are doing this for yourself! I'd love to keep up with your updates.

So far it has gone very well. The people are very nice and the groups are interesting. I'm still technically in the "screening" process of things meaning I'm not fully admitted to the program yet but if it continues to go well and it helps me then I probably will be in about a month from now.

Looked into it a couple of times: once I wanted to go but wasn't "sick enough". The second time my psychiatrist's nurse recommended it as an option but I declined (over a year later under different circumstances).

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

The screening process is basically a like a period of time you can try out the program and see if it fits your needs and which groups benefit you most before they decide to fully admit you. If it turns out it doesn't help you or there are other issues you don't have to be admitted if you decide its not for you.

I have missed a couple days this week because I have been sick, I'm really thinking it's a good fit though and will probably go through with admission. The only thing is though I don't know how I'd balance living on my own for the first time soon, going back to college next month and this.

I'm just being assessed at the moment for a day treatment program for an eating disorder. I think it's similar to what I've read here, groups most days but not an inpatient. I'm dreading it and worried what everyone will be like (my social anxiety is really kicking in). I don't think I'm "ill" enough to be there but my psychiatrist thinks I am :-(

Good luck! It's much better than being inpatient that's for sure. It's really actually nice, I don't know how or what program you're getting into but I'm sure it will be helpful

I think I'm going to start going on Mondays too, I go Tues-Friday but I have just been home the past few Mondays bored out of my mind. Plus there are some groups only on that day I want to check out

Hey it's been going really good, I am getting admitted. I now go Mondays through Fridays except Wednesdays because I need a break in the middle of the week to kinda break things up.

The new cycle started this past week. Each cycle lasts 12 weeks, you make a schedule with your clinician of what groups you attend each day.

I'm getting a lot out of the program, happy to have found it/been recommended to it.

When I was in day treatment I also skipped Wednesdays (because it was way too tiring for me to go every day).
I'm glad it's going so well.

I'm officially admitted now and have a clinician there, they put me with someone who I think will be a really good fit and it was the person I was hoping to get even though I didn't give any preference.

I am moving into my own apartment next week, it's literally on the same block so now I won't have to rely on medicaid cabs (which suck) I'l be able to walk to and from the clinic.

I did a day treatment program for 3 weeks about 3 years ago. It was CBT-based and I found it useful since I had no clue what CBT was about. I have anxiety so I spent my lunch hour walking on the treadmill instead of schmoozing with the others. After about 2 weeks the programs started to repeat and my insurance wanted me out. It was a good program and I'd do it again if I lived closer. For the second time in my life people actually listened to me. Good luck!
