Anyone else taking statins for cholesterol? I have to take them having had quadruple bypass surgery last year.

Due to side-effects, I am now on my 3rd statin. I've been noticing an increased intolerance to sugars and carbs. Even a little pasta or plain yogurt makes me excessively sleepy.

Has anyone else had this side-effect?

I take simvastatin for high cholesterol, and I've noticed a similar effect. However, simvastatin is not the only med I take, so I can't say with certainty.

I developed severe muscle pain and stiffness from atorvastatin and simvastatin. I now take Livalo. I am still adjusting to it. The muscle pain and stiffness has significantly decreased; the gastro problems are not pretty.

There is a lot of recent research that statins are not helpful and actually cause a good degree of harm. I bring this up not to start a panic but to encourage you to beocome an informed user and to apply critical thinking to statin drug use.

Health to you!

Did you know garlic and hot peppers are good for reducing cholesterol? I've tried statins and I'm pretty sure they were causing leg cramps and severe constipation, so I won't take them. My doc doesn't like it, but as long as I'm doing something (garlic) she's happy.

I take simstatin with CoQ 10. found this:
"If you’re on a statin medication, you MUST take CoQ10. Not only do statins stop cholesterol production, they also hinder your body’s production of CoQ10. That’s why many people end up with muscle aches and weakness while taking statins. Statins can also cause memory loss and a host of other problems. If you’re on a statin, you need to take at least 200 mg of a highly-absorbable CoQ10."

Statins hurt more people than they help. They were not even developed for random people's high cholesterol, they were for a specific group that have inherited high cholesterol.

Side effects can be muscle pains, high blood sugar, gastric problems and pseudodementia.

You're better off cutting out sugars because it causes malformed cholesterol transporters that get stuck and create plaque. I don't know if trans fats are legal there, but if so, they shouldn't be eaten.

The sleepiness from carbs is because statins can cause a prediabetic state and even diabetes.

I eat only real butter and use organic cold pressed virgin coconut oil and virgin olive oil, Both of those oils don't give you cholesterol
Thanks for this!

i've had 3 docs try to put me on Statins. i'm seriously diabetic, and have pulmonary hypertension. they are idiots. i actually took them from the first doc, knowing nuthin',, and got sick as a dog.

the last time my BP was soo high even i was impressed,, i told the doc i'd take care of it myself. i did. using the binaural beats sound tracks, and meditation, i lowered my blood pressure by 50/30 in 30 days. man, was that doc mad~!

No idea what you eat, but any refined sugar is totally off limit. Also sometimes they fool people they have high cholesterol when they do not. Ratio is important. Total cholesterol ÷ HDL = ratio. Shouldn't be more than 5 and preferable below 3.6. Some people have a high total cholesterol but a good ratio and are still put on meds!

What this really measures is how much vLDL stays in the arteries and does not get recycled. That is the real bad guy while normal LDL is not (unknown to most).

Looking into your own records might help finding out the truth.

Some people have a mutation that creates way too much cholesterol and they need the meds, but most people can eat themselves healthier.

Also unknown (very sadly) is that it is crucial to be on CoQ10 and vitamin D if on cholesterol meds. If your doc doesn't recommend this, ask them why not.
