I was outside doing yard work (the first time now that the fracture in my back is healed). Three of my dogs were out with me, just running around the yard.......

Leo decided to wander off into the field next to my house where the grass had been mowed by a friends tractor. He started pouncing up & down & biting at something. I knew he was after some small animal...but wasn't sure what I was going to find. I ran over to where he was & just as I got there, he yiped & limped away on 3 legs. I headed to where he had been & there was a cute little mole. Leo still wasn't wanting to leave it alone even after it bit his foot......

I picked it up by it's little tail & the blind little thing just hang there squirming around a bit.....I was curious to see just how bit it's mouth could possibly be, knowing that they eat bugs, I knew they had a mouth & teeth, but didn't know just what they looked like. I touched it close to it's mouth & it opened up quite a large mouth for such a little guy. I petted it's soft silky fur....this guy was quite fat, so he's been eating very well.

I decided to put him down close to the wood pile next to the huge tree in my front yard so he could find safety in a place where Leo couldn't get to him.

This is Leo's second mole chase....only this time his foot got the bad end of the deal.....he's been whining around all night with his sore foot. I looked it all over & couldn't find where the bite was.....but it must bother Leo, otherwise he wouldn't be complaining.

Ah, the thrills of living in the country.....we all love it.

Ouch, sounds like he got bit quite hard.

Try to find the foot that got bitten, just in case it got infected. Better safe than sorry.

As a child, my favorite pets were the backyard moles, until one bit me hard one day and that ended that, lol. I remember how much it hurt.

One word of caution............... moles can also carry rabies, so perhaps a visit to your vet is in order and to keep a close watch over him for the next 10 days. Perhaps a booster with another rabies vaccine is in order too. I had my round with a rabies incident years ago, where I was bitten by a feral cat, so my health department thoroughly educated me on this subject. Anything warm blooded can get rabies. Let's hope this is not the case for you, but it's fortunate you found the source of your dog's misadventure.

Chances are this is little critter doesn't have rabies. The reason I say this is there are two types of contact with rabid animals, one is called a provoked attack such as the interaction between your dog and the mole and an unprovoked attack where the animal comes up and bites for no reason. The unprovoked attack is usually one sign of an illness, such as rabies.
