My girl is 14 months old now and had her first season in July this year. The last few days she has been stealing my kids cuddly toys and gets very distressed if they are out of her reach. She normally chews them up but this time she is just carrying them to her bed and laying down with them.

I am just wondering if this is a phantom pregnancy and if so how long it will last. I feel so sad for her : (

I'm not sure an animal would be prone to phantom pregnancy. Do you think she is feeling insecure about something, though? Have there been any changes in her life/living conditions recently? I do think most pets do like to have stuffed animals, though. That's why they are so popular!

Maybe a vet could give you some ideas.
Thanks for this!

Soup, since she's had her first heat cycle she must've reached puberty. Maybe her changed hormones are making her more maternal?
Thanks for this!

Animals can have false pregnancies.

Wow, that's amazing. As Liz said, might these have something to do with hormones?
Thanks for this!

Soup, is there any chance she might be in a "family way?"

Oh no I hope not - no I'm fairly sure she didn't find a boyfriend when she was in season.

yes, it very well could be a false pregnancy. Had a Rottie that did this EVERY heat cycle.

Do watch out for any unusual discharge, though, or going off her food, as that could be a sign of pyometra, which requires immediate medical attention.

My doggie, when I was a child, had a pregnancy that didn't make it She was a little white llasa poo and he was a big black lab. She got out one day while in heat and we found them together, in the middle of the road, in the middle of their action (this was an odd sight to see). During this heat we'd also tried to breed her with our family friend's llasa.

So when labor started, so exciting, but it went wrong, vet had to intervene, there was only one puppy, a big one, and they gave him mouth to mouth but couldn't save him

Tela was very depressed for a long time after. She collected my stuffed animals and tried to nurse them. She was very grouchy and snapped at anyone who came near. I then rescued a little gray kitten, Louie. And she actually nursed him... it was quite a sight!
