Yep! I remember the first time I saw him. He was coming up over the little hill to our yard (it's probably called something else...our yard sloped downward and then there was a parking lot and a building for a hair salon; those, including our house, are gone now, and there's a Dunkin' Donuts in its place), and I saw him, and said, "Meow!" in my cat voice, and he said, "Meow!" and then I welcomed him and he stayed. No collar or nothing, or I'd have tried to find his owners, in case they'd lost him. I started feeding him, and he hung around, plus sometimes slept with me in my bed.

I have three dogs
"Addison" blue heeler: Addison, "miss I'm in charge," "not the biggest b#$%" (after all, I am), "the bathroom trash belongs standing up", "meanie big sissy", "grumpy", "the grey one" (as in it's ok for children to pet the black dogs but only adults can pet the grey one) and she knows her name is the American sign language sign for "a" (she was born deaf)
"Silas" poodle mix: "little guy", "Your name isn't Kato"
"Kato" large mix: "grumpy old man", "old man", "your name isn't Silas"

I intended to call Addison "addy" but seeing as how she can't hear that never took. I realized when I went to write this post that mostly I call them by their names. They collectively are known as "dogs" or "you S$%^S" depending on my mood and what they've done. People are generally impressed when I say something like "if you're a dog you better not be in the kitchen" and they all leave the kitchen or "if you're a dog who wants a treat you should come here" and they all come sit at my feet, in order and wait their turn for their treat.

I some off my list. When any of the animals misbehave they are known collectively as "the heathens"

Woody is sometimes known as Mr. Grumpy.

The horses are known collectively as "boys", as in when calling them up to eat I bellow "C'mon boys". When we had mares they were known generically as "mare", "the girls" or "babe." We once bought a mare who thought her name was "girl" because that was all her previous owner caller her.

Kitty, how does Addison know to respond to your statements about treats and being in the kitchen if she is deaf? That's neat that she knows "a" in ASL. One of my dogs is going deaf. We communicate through hand signals alot.
Thanks for this!

Addison cues off the other dogs for general statements. She also usually lays somewhere so when I get up my feet touch her or I have to step over her to get out of a room. She also watches my body language. She knows when I'm sad and comes over and lays her head on my knee. If I'm mad she knows. She also knows a lot of ASL signs and I use the lights to cue her if she's not looking at me (like turning off the porch light means come in the house..or I'll flick the living room lights).

I call my dog Ellie my "puppy", my "booboo", sometimes my "boobie". I have no clue why I do this, and I try not to be all obnoxious and baby-talk with my dogs. But I just can't help it! They're so cute!

Harry the gray ocicat is also known as Prince, Boxcat, Grayfur, Shelfcat, Kitten, Joker, and Sasiscat (a mix of the Russian "sasiska" [sausage] and the English cat).

Diana the sandy ocicat is also known as Princess, Tapoozik (mix of the Hebrew "tapooz" [orange] and the Russian "poozik" [belly]), Scaredy, Anxie-cat, Peachtail, and Pillowcat.

I used to have a prawn named Big Guy and a fish named Bubbles and they had various nicknames, but I forgot them...

Boots is Keetins.

Annah was Lil Miss. - "Lil Miss is a little amiss!"

Rascal was Damascus for a short while. (I know; weird. The kitty had a d on his cheek that I didn't discover until we'd had him for two years.)

Chance was Chance Merance.

The pups weren't mine but the kitties were.

Salem has Slim, Skipper, Skips, Salump (my nephew calls him that), Dr. Slim, Say-Say, Big Boy, Jynx, Senator Skip, Hopping Boss, Star, Emperor, Honey bun, puddin', and Sir Salem.

Surprisingly, they know which name means which one. Foster even gets upset if I am talking softly to him and mention one of Salem's nicknames.

My dog is named Lola, but we rarely call her that. Little Dough Rehab is what we generally call her(obscure rap reference, don't ask how we arrived at that), if not demon. She knows that any use of the words "little" or "demon" is in reference to her at least.

We have a rabbit called Jack, although I usually refer to him as Furball as he seems to be permanently moulting.

I have a ton of nicknames for my two cats. Their real names are Smudge and La De Da. Smudge is Pig, Pug, Mug, Punk, Bug, Tig, Pook, Poo... who knows what else. La De Da is La, Pig (both of them are "Pigs"), Tug, Nerd (she looks like one), Fatty (she is), Muppet (she looks like one), and Poo. They pretty much just respond to how my voice sounds when I call them at this point.

I know. I'm a dork. I can't help it.
