Those who followed my Great Horse Hunt thread know I found my new horse. He is a grey Quarter Horse looking gelding with an unusual black spot on his face and a black smudge on his neck. Heaven only knows what the previous owner called him. The dealer I got him from called him "Smudge."

I've been trying to figure out his name. I believe they tell us their name, still I'm looking for something that fits. In the past I usually came up with barn names from songs or books I liked. From the get-go I thought the black mark on his face was going to determine his name. First thought was Dark Star. Problem is that will get shortened to "Star." That's w-a-y too common. Sort of like Spot for a dog.

Then I thought to tie in my Irish heritage. In Gaelic Dark Star would be Ciar Realta (sounds like Keer Rail-ta). I've tried running it all together (Keerrail-ta), but it's a bit of a mouthful. The diminutive of Ciar is Kieran (KEER-awn). Yeh, I know "diminutive" is supposed to be a shortened version of the original.

I kind of like Kieran. What do y'all think?

Anyone have any other suggestions?
Thanks for this!

Liz, I followed your great adventure and saw the happy ending. Can you upload a picture of "Smudge"? Hard to know if a name fits if you have never seen them.

Our 2 horses became 3 (filly born 12-24-15), so just went through your struggle for a name, and the more suggestions I heard, the easier it became. But I am having trouble suggesting one without a look-see. Here is link to my album of our horses. All are QHs
Stallion is palomino, mare is the buckskin.

I'll keep thinking anyway, and will check back. Congrats again!

Just thought of a suggestion! Greyson.... If you are like me, sometimes a name can get your ideas going. I would take part of one and mix w/another person's suggestion, which would lead me to another name, etc. Would look at the filly and say a name, and you are correct, horses do tell us what to name them!

As requested - pictures. The head shot shows the black marking on his face and the smudge on his neck.

Fishin'Fool and Kathy, love the humor but not going to call him Mr. Ed or Trigger. No need to get your coat or sweater though. I like the jokes.

I'm really leaning toward Kieron. I like the sound of it. I'm trying it out on him for a few days to see what he says. On the other hand I like Greyson too, though with my accent it will come out Greysin.

Sorry, I don't remember who provided the link to Irish names. It was a similar website that lead me to Kieron. I mentioned I get ideas for names from books and music. One name I thought of was Cian (Key-an) who is a character in a series of books I like. Hmmm, maybe I'll go with that.

Waiting is. I'll know when his name comes along.

Nice looking gelding! I am afraid my suggestion is plain, but can not resist suggesting John Michell the unsung discoverer of dark stars/black holes. Only because I like the obscure :-) He could then be called JM or just J. I call mine by his first initial all the time, reserving his full barn name for important stuff:-)
