I'm so sorry. I had to put both of my cats down 9 weeks apart. The last was 3 weeks ago today. It hurts terribly and feels like it can never get better. I still miss both of them every day. Time helps some but it's still hard. I have spent a lot of time looking for every picture I've ever taken of either of them because those pictures help replace the memories of the last days for each of them.

There's a thread on pet loss in the grief forum (it's way down on the list) that might give you a place to mourn with others.

(((Yours_Truly))), I am sorry you have to go through this experience. I think it's just awful to have to make this choice for a loved pet. Yet, when it comes to a vet advising this it's because it's the humane thing to do "for" that animal who is suffering and the quality of their life is poor and painful and the choice to euthanize is because the animal is going to die and the pain will get worse and death is inevitable.

We would prefer our pets die in their sleep in a peaceful way. When we euthanize that is what the veterinarian does, they heavily sedate them first and then they euthanize so it's not "painful" and the animal actually does pass in their sleep and the owner gets the chance to be there and love them.

Your cat has been so lucky to have a loving owner like you, always remember that. Animals who enjoy their life being loved by their owners are always so lucky as there are so many who don't have that happen for them.

I'm sorry you're going through this and how painful it is - we sometimes prolong the suffering of our pets to ease our own grief at losing them but it is our last gift to them to give them a peaceful passing after they have given us so much. They come into our lives to teach us about love and leave to teach us about loss , and we love many of them when we have a big heart. I lost my companion of 18 years in June last year , I saw him after he passed and he was healing. I didn't think I could love another , but one was waiting and I adore him , and that's the biggest tribute we can pay to a beloved pet. Hugs and healing for you both.

Thank you all so much. I have been avoiding crying by pushing away or diverting the thoughts and memories but, with so much love and compassion from you guys it feels good to cry again.

She was 18. It was very difficult and so sudden. One day you’re taking them in for a checkup and the next thing you know you’re bringing them in for euthanasia. A lot of listening, trying to remember, thinking, & discussing.

The gist: a mass of unknown origin was obstructing her intestines and had caused a section to dilate. She was probably very uncomfortable or in pain. To have surgery would have topped out at $4k+ and there is no guarantee she would have made it through or for how long at her age. And I can't really afford it. And some other things like she was also in the beginning phase of kidney disease, that seem much simpler now than they did the day before yesterday. You know vets, they have to give you all the options but, they won't tell you what to do. So I cried my way through to a decision. With help from my brothers. It was heart-wrenching (I checked the hyphen in 'heart-wrenching' & discovered I combined 'heartrending' and 'gut-wrenching.' Either one works, it was one or the other and both at times.)

So for the first time in 18 years I went to bed truly alone, and woke-up the same. Sometimes, I think I see her out of the corner of my eye.

That night, one of my brothers noticed it was 3 years to the day of our mom’s death.

Again, thank all of you for the kind and loving responses. It really means a lot to me and makes a huge difference.

Yours_Truly

Phobie is such a pretty name for a cat. Again, I am so, so sorry.

I have owned so many cats over so many years, and of course with that comes the losses. In reading your post, I am absolutely sure you made the best choice for your kitty. Doesn't make the loss any easier, but I just want to share this with you.
