When my mum was alive she would breed budgies and show them. Behind the bedroom where my sister and I slept there were several large aviaries. When the sun was up they were chirping away. It got to a point she maxed out around the 300 budgie mark.
They loved their milk thistles. I walked the beaches after a windy storm to pick up the cuttle fish shells so they had something to trim their beaks on. They do make great pets and are easy to train. The white and blue ones are my favourite. Do you want yours to talk? I had a pet one called Pepi. |

I had a couple as a kid, pretty birds and fairly easy to train.
I also had a cockatiel and it was also easy to train, it got to the point where I left him out of his cage whenever I was home and he loved to just hang out with me. I remember falling asleep on my bed face down and when I woke up he was just standing on my back waiting for me to wake up.

hahaha I don't know. I've often thought that if I could get my budgie to talk, I would make it say cuss words but I imagine it's quite hard to get a budgie to talk is it not? |

If you want a budgie to talk you need to get a male budgie. If you put a mirror in it's cage then it thinks there is another bird around. You can tell they are male by the blue sear (area above the beak). Hens are brown. Mind you you can't tell what sex they are until they are a little older. If you want it to talk then it needs to be on it's own.
Budgies are flock birds so maybe getting a pair would be best so that they have company. They do make lovely chirping sounds. Budgies are good small pets that dont have the the need to be walked. Just a change of water each day, seed and a clean cage. |

it's interesting you say getting a pair would be best. was told by someone else (not on here) to just get one matter of opinion, I guess |

They also need lots of toys/enrichment in their (at least 32 x 21) cage, have special requirements for a safe environment, and avian vets are quite costly. Have you researched the hazards? Birds are not cheap or low-maintenance pets! I speak from experience as I’ve had birds for decades. Make sure you’re prepared. Also, are you committing to caring for the budgie(s) for the next 15 years or so?
Budgies are really flock creatures and tend not to bond as strongly to people as some of the other species do. Thus a budgie buddy would be good. People are usually not prepared to adequately meet the social needs of birds. |

As a long time bird owner, rescuer, I always discourage bird ownership. Budgies are a big problem. They are intelligent and cheap and are treated like knick knacks.
