I don't know where to turn. My daughter is bipolar, borderline personality, and has been cutting for years. She is no 17. Lately, she is spinning out of control and has started burning herself in large areas. These areas get infected. I have asked and asked for help, but in our state, a teen has the right at the age of 13 to refuse help and she has done just that. I don't know where to turn.

I am sorry she is doing that. 13 is too young to be able to make sound medical decisions. With her cutting and burning and the infection that results in more physical pain. Probably will not consent until she can't consent...i.e. Fever from the infection leaving her too weak to protest. Does she have a regular doctor? Maybe if you explain what is going on, they might know of a way around this?

I would look up the laws in your state regarding involuntary commitment. Most places have a way to deal with people who are mentally incapable of making their own decisions and/or pose great risk to themselves or others. Your daughter may fall in one of these categories.
I'm also wondering if she has been officially diagnosed and if so, if she sees a therapist? Like Nucking suggested, her regular doctor may be of use if this isn't the case. I would definitely want her to see somebody, and if none of these options are viable, I'd try talking her into seeing someone. Or even make the appointment and drive her there, if she's in a state of mind where that would be a viable option. I'm not familiar with how things work in your family, so I'm not sure what would convince her. I do wish you luck though. Being a caregiver can be very difficult and demanding; particularly if it's for someone you care deeply about. I hope things get better soon. <3 |

Could she be Baker Act'ed? Not sure. I know my father had to have my uncle Baker act'ed before, though I am not sure if that is certain state laws...
The big fear is that there is a potential to push the daughter away from getting help on her own terms. Sorry: Baker Act is a Florida Statute. Not national
