My husband was just diagnosed with chronic depression a few months ago. He is in the military, but is in the process of getting a medical discharge because of the depression. The episode that led to the diagnosis involved him pulling himself out of firearm training because he was thinking of hurting himself. I know I am lucky that he had the wisdom to seek help immediately and not put himself in a situation where he would hurt himself. He is in treatment currently, although we don't know what w'll do once he's out of the military and no longer on their insurance.

I love my husband very much. I want to make things work, but it is stressful to be around him in his down moods. I have never been an emotional person myself- I generally go through life on a very steady note, and generally approach life with extreme practicality. (DH has never been practical whether he's up or down, but I love that about him.) I have a hard time understanding where he's coming from when I can't see a problem.

Our 1 year anniversary is in a month. I know that this is something we will have to deal with for the rest of our lives, but I don't know where to start or what to do. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Hi my partner has depression and borderline personality disorder so can understand how you feel. We found for us finding information that was jargon free and reading through it together helped. We also found it useful to print off copys for close family to read so they have some idea of the problems we face and can offer support to both of us. He is your husband and it's natural and normal to want to support him but having someone to support you, to listen when you need to vent your frustrations etc is also very important.
