Hello vallalar2015: Welcome to PsychCentral! PC is a great place to gain support as well as to acquire information related to mental health concerns. There are many caring members here.
As to your question... well... I'm not a professional... so anything I would say is simply my personal opinion. However, my personal opinion is that the word "cure" is really not relevant when speaking of any mental illness, be it BPD or another diagnosis. People can be "cured" of pneumonia or cancer, etc. Treatments are applied & whatever the illness is, is gone. Mental illnesses are not like that. One cannot cut out a mental illness or kill it with antibiotics. But that is not to say there are no hope. There are medications that are available to treat symptoms. And individuals can learn coping strategies which allow them to lead normal lives. So there is certainly the hope of living a normal life & even, over time, lessening the symptoms to the point where they are no longer of concern. I don't know if you're asking because you have recently been diagnosed as having BPD, or if someone you care about has, but certainly having been diagnosed as having BPD is no cause for alarm. In fact, knowing what it is that is going on can be a good thing because then one can get appropriate treatment & begin to heal. So I wish you well & send warm thoughts your way. Please do keep posting, here on PC. The more you post, & reply to others' posts, the more you'll gain from the time you spend here! ![]()

Yes BPD can be essentially cured with a type of therapy called DBT. It is up to the individual to do the work.

I agree with Supanova. BPD can be treated (eventually cured) if the individual actually does the work of recognizing their cognitions and changing their behavior. It's not easy, especially if the individual considers their current behavior adaptive rather than maladaptive. DBT empowers the individual by giving them new skills to meet the challenges they experience in life. It teaches distress tolerance, mindfulness, emotional regulation and interpersonal skills.
