but i fear i am a kleptomaniac. i cannot walk into a store without taking something. every day i swear to myself "okay, DONT TAKE ANYTHING" but i walk into a store and it's like oh crap, here i go again. i can't help it. i know it's bad and i'm absolutely TERRIFIED out of my mind that i'll be caught, but i still can't stop. and it's not like i really need these things either. i go home later to see what i got and i look and i really don't need a lot of it. i often have similar things. but i take them anyway

My grandma was a kleptomaniac.. she's dead now, but she would take so much.. like even at restaurants she'd load up her bag (which was always huge) with all the salt shakers, ketchup bottles, etc. She got caught a lot, too, and when my dad was a child he said it was very embarrassing.

I have nothing to offer help wise, really, but obviously you aren't alone. She never got treatment for it, but i'm sure you could tell a therapist about it and they might have ways to cope.

I not really familiar with this...my only thought is to minimize the time you are in stores and try to go with someone?

Therapy would be important in overcoming this. There must be a reason that you feel like you need to do what you do. Maybe like a fear of not having enough? What do you think it might be? There is a need there somewhere, and when you find the need, you can find another way to meet the need.
