During my time in the ha-ha house this week (one I'd not been in before), the staff psychologist gave me a pile of tests.

Apparently, according to my results, I am depressed and anxious (no, really? that's only why I was there) ... but also have borderline traits (that tends to come up because of the SI) and am avoidant.

I have been at this therapy and med and general mental health crap a long, long time, and up to now NO ONE has ever suggested that I have personality disorders.

I guess I'm just looking for some understanding, because I don't quite get it. I mean, just because I prefer to be by myself most of the time, it's cause to label me?? And as far as "unstable relationships," I'm still in touch with friends I've had since early elementary school 30+ years ago. So what gives? so, this is a new one on me....

Labels are just fancy things given to categorize your behaviour, and put you in a box. (My opinion, for the most part). Labels can be helpful in dealing with problems you experience, but maybe not all the time. Do you think having this diagnosis will be beneficial for you, in changing the way that therapy is done?

If you think its totally pointless, then don't worry about it. Some pdocs & t's need to put down diagnoses for insurance purposes, and sometimes personality tests aren't really useful.

Don't worry too much about it. I probably have dependent personality characteristics, borderline & some avoidant... but I'm not about to go get labelled as such unless it helps me. I don't think it would.

(((((((((((((Candy))))))))))))))))

Beyond that... As you know, Doc has some good resources listed for understanding the personality disorders. Maybe you can see yourself in the characteristics?

Did they actually use the term disorder with personality, or were they referring just to your personality traits? It can be useful to identify one's traits, even if they do not reach the disorder range. It's still labeling, but it's not a diagnosis of an Axis II disorder. This means the traits are less firmly entrenched, are less maladaptive, and cause less severe problems.

And yes, depressed and anxious...good ol' scales 2 and 7 on the MMPI. At times I felt like if someone didn't come up with those then the test was noteworthy. so, this is a new one on me....

He said borderline traits and avoidant disorder. I've heard the borderline traits one enough that it's probably accurate. I don't know enough about avoidant to know if it's true or not. I just prefer my own company. I've always called that introversion. Is that now a "disorder" too? so, this is a new one on me....

Avoidant is a disorder if it causes problems in functioning. Avoidant usually means wants to interact with others, but avoids it because it's too scary. So you might prefer your own company because it's more comfortable than the company of others, maybe? Does it seem like it causes problems for you if you stick with your own company?

Yes, why you prefer your own company (in my case, because I felt the other people were ijits) can make a difference. Condescension (with or without rain :-) is not a nice personality trait. Hopefully 20 years of therapy got rid of a good little bit of mine.

Allegedly humans are "social" creatures so deliberately not doing stuff with others (being invited and always turning down or not being invited because you haven't made an effort to take an interest in others so they include you and then convincing yourself that, "I didn't want to go anyway") if it "sticks out" can be seen as others as anti-social or avoidant I guess.

I'd say I was pretty avoidant (sometimes still am). My stepmother was big on telling me, "no one's going to come beat down your door!" which I got very tired of hearing?

I think GG's onto something -- I'm uncomfortable around people, for the most part. I can fake it really well for work -- hell, even one of the nurses in the hospital told me I came across as "personable" -- but I really just don't like going out to parties, etc, and I turn down most invitations out.

Hummm. I'm going to have to do some research on this one.

Perna, the T also told me my results show that I think I'm smarter than most people (let's not go there right now so, this is a new one on me....). so, this is a new one on me....

Good luck Candy on your investigation. I am so into this disorder, there are so many ways to look at it. Let us know what you find!

Candy~

I too have been told I have these traits. But "labels" I choose not to think of it that way. I chose to want to know what they think is going on with me, and to work towards turning things around with better thinking and choices. You can look at this in a negative way if you want, but you dont have to.
