I've put off the standard pap (?) smear test for a long time, for a few reasons, now I think I need to go to it
I've been abused by doctors (although they wouldn't call it such) which is the main reason I've avoided this (and other) tests.
Grrrr. Also I didn't really feel I was worth it (in fact a doctor said I was wasting his time when I said I thought every 5 years wasn't often enough)
Sorry if this post is trivial and doesn't belong here. Not really sure where to post it.

(((((((((((((((fuzzy)))))))))))))))

I have a hard time with those tests too. Luckily (?) I tend to just dissociate and kind of "miss" the whole thing, which makes it a bit more bearable.

Some ideas I have read here are...telling your doctor that it is triggering for you, so they can help you or bringing a friend with you. I think if I had a history of abuse by a doctor, it would help me to have someone with me to make sure I am safe.

to you!

Now what does this statement mean? My interpretation is that you are saying "my needs aren't important - I'm not important"..........

Dear Fuzzy you are worth being taken care of and you taking care of your health! Your post is far from trival, getting pap smears are scary, I had to go get my first one last week and was just as scared. Your emotions, feelings, concernes are far from trival, we all want to help in any way possible

Treehouse has a wonderful idea, is there anyone you could take with you? Try explaing to the dr why you are nervous, one of my tricks is I take a small stuffed animal with me, something to hold and focus my attention on, I focus on my little stuffed ox, I go over in my mind how he feels, what color he is, why I named him Leroy, where I got him, and so on, it really helps, and the exam is over before you even know it.

((((((((((((((((((((((((Fuzzybear)))))))))))))))))))))))))

Sending lots of safe warm hugs to you, you do matter, and you are very cared for. Keep us updated hun.

Love
Sparrow

I don't enjoy getting a Pap test done either. I get them done every year.

QFB, you are worthwhile and you deserve to have whatever tests you want to give you peace of mind. Having a Pap test every year shouldn't be an issue for a doctor. It is a simple exam although it can be disturbing for some females to have to go through.

I have only had two of these for the same reasons. I was soooo scared. I couldn't do it with my PCP (even though she was female). I was able to have a NP in the clinic I went to do it. I told her about my SA history and she was wonderful about it. She took the time I needed to be comfortable with it. You should definitely talk with your doc about your fears and make sure to do it with someone you are comfortable with. If you feel comfortable with it I think taking a friend or other supportive person with you is a good idea. Good Luck!!!!

I don't want to make it sound like it's ok for them to do it, but doctors can sometimes be a bit unattatched and maybe insensitive. By no means is this all of them, but it does happen.

Perhaps you could find a nurse that can do the test, or go to a GUM clinic where they sometimes can be done (look online to find one near you that does, or phone to see if they do). These places may be able to help put your mind at rest a bit better, the GUM clinic especially because this is their specialised area.

A bad experience can make it hard to do again, but you also know it could be a life saving test and if the right people can do it and help you through it then it could be a quick and easier one too.

I hope that helps a bit. xx
