Hello, I have PTSD from childhood abuse and I was wondering if anyone else has a reduced startle reflex rather than an increased one?
When something happens that usually makes people jump I feel things slow and I have almost the exact opposite response - I do nothing. It's an uncomfortable feeling though still. Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts about what may be happening or any similar feelings - I feel a bit weird!? Cheers Monty |

I've heard it described as Fight, Flight and/or Freeze ... I've found myself in this Freeze mode on more than one occasion ... Where I'm actually frozen on the spot and unable to move or speak ... It is quite frightening to experience that one, because if in immediate danger there is no fight or flight!

Yeah it depends if I am in Freeze/numbing stage. Otherwise I jump at my husband just walking into the room. He always say "I live here too!"

When a child’s emotional needs are not met and a child is repeatedly hurt and abused, this deeply and profoundly affects the child’s development. Wanting those unmet childhood needs in adulthood. Looking for safety, protection, being cherished and loved can often be normal unmet needs in childhood, and the survivor searches for these in other adults. This can be where survivors search for mother and father figures. Transference issues in counseling can occur and this is normal for childhood abuse survivors. |

Thanks - that makes sense actually - it feels very much like I freeze. Good job I don't live back in prehistoric times else I'd be a goner!!

I have this too. I react very slowly or not at all.

I have this to. I freeze. I can't speak or move at times. It is very frustrating. My H mistakes being triggered and stuck in a PTSD moment as me choosing not to answer him. HE gets very frustrated w/ me. Eventually all I can do is stand there and cry when we argue. I can't speek or escape.

Doesn't matter what it is, a loud noise, whatever, my body totally ignores it. If someone shot at me I wouldn't flinch. My childhood destroyed my ability to react to danger. I just don't react at all.
I can definitely relate. |

I just asked my T about this. She said normal PTSD is a mix of numbness and hyper vigilance. I do both. Not at the same time, I mean.

Thanks everyone for replying - now I don't feel so alone with this. I know it shouldn't be important but I was starting to feel like I didn't really fit in anywhere with how I was feeling and acting. I probably need to talk to my therapist more about what's happening with me. Hope everyone is doing ok.

Same here. I react way too much or not at all, and my therapist says this is normal for cPTSD. Generally speaking, I'm hypervigilant when I'm grounded and non-reactive when I'm dissociating.
