I have this problem when I go to sleep, I'm sure this has to do with being abused at a young age in the hands of my ex boyfriend. I cannot sleep relaxed, I try and relax and I cannot, I have to be stiff, laying on my stomach, arms under my chest, and legs straight. When I notice I tighten up I try and relax, but it doesn't work.

Can anyone give me pointers? I haven't seen my ex in 6 yrs, so why can I not sleep.

I've been in other situations where I should not have been in but nothing happened in my room except for the abusive ex?? So what's going on, why do I have to sleep tense?

It sounds like a survival technique. You were in an abusive situation so you're body was used to always being on guard. Unfortunately those survival behaviors get ingrained because of the stressful situation and are hard to break. The brain sucks sometimes doesn't it?

Hi Jess

Yeah I guess that is what it is, everything happened in that bed, and at night more then any other time, alot of bad bad memories in the bed that I still have.

My phyciatrist actually told me to switch around my room because I kept getting flash backs, I did at one point change it back to the way it was because there was only so much I could do with it. It does look a little different now, but alot of things are the same, like my ugly big thick pink certains, the wall color, the carpet, and the bed as well as items..but I try and not think about that.....

Sundance,
O my..no wonder you have a hard time sleeping. I definately think you should try changing the room. Buy new curtains (that you like because it sounds like you hate the ones you have) why keep something in your room that does not please you. Your room should be a place of solstice for you. I understand that cost can be a factor but maybe at some point you might think about buying a new bed. You might be surprised how much better you can sleep when you are in a new bed with no old memories.
I definately feel that if you make your room more your own place you can have pleasant dreams. Even doing something like a new coat of pain or new nightstand. Stencils are fun too!

Stay strong,
Jessica

Hi Shakes

I just don't find the point of changing around my room now, it's been 7 yrs so what another 7? I try and spend as much time as I can where my boyfriend has his place that he bought last year. I feel so much at home there, and I have a key so I can sneak over whenever haha.

I plan to sew my own curtains one day. i'm 23 for 2 more months, and this all happened at age 16.... I don't know. Cannot relax ...always sleeping tense
