My pdoc has referred me to a psychologist for trauma counseling. I'm a little nervous. Obviously, I'm going to have to talk about things I'd rather not discuss and think about stuff that I'm trying to forget.
Has anyone else here been through talk therapy and if so, did it help you?

Hi Disorder7.
Yes...I started trauma counselling over a decade ago to assist me in processing events that led to my suffering PTSD and associated depression. I must say that I was very optimistic at the initial sessions, however...as soon as I began revealing horrific details and striving to lay it all out there, my therapist became quite obsequious....Her demeanour changed from professional guidance giver to fawning & sympathetic. I didn't need someone to agree that I had every reason to feel the way I did...I already knew that. I needed her to assist me in compartmentalising, show me the tools to move on with my life....she didn't, or couldn't. I guess there are therapists that are more experienced, or have varying techniques, and that each case is different. Just be very clear at the onset of what you hope to achieve from the therapy. I made the mistake of allowing her to dictate the course of each session.....I think the patient needs to go at their own pace, and be actively involved in deciding on outcomes.

I've had 2 types of trauma therapy - both helpful in their own ways. I did EMDR for a number of years, and found it useful for processing traumatic memories so that they're no longer quite so intense.
What I'm finding more useful is the work I'm doing now. I'm working on through a workbook, called "Life after Trauma" with a psychologist, and it's helping enormously. It doesn't ask you to revisit the trauma. Instead it looks at how past trauma has shaped your perceptions and coping strategies into ones that may be dysfunctional, and how you can change them for healthier coping strategies. I wouldn't suggest trying to do the workbook on your own, it's helpful to have a professional go through it with you. splitimage |

Are you doing trauma counseling or talk therapy? Talk therapy is pretty much where you just sit there and talk about your week. Not a whole lot happens. Trauma therapy is quite different.

I wasn't aware there was a difference. Thanks for that! ![]()
