Ok. When I was 5 my step dad threw kerosene on me and threatened to set me on fire to make my mom scared. He used to beat me and my sister and mom. And right after the kerosene incident, our house actually caught fire and I, being 5 years old, hid under the bed and was trapped until the neighbor boy came in and got me out. Anyway, my mom divorced this man when i was 12. All thorugh my teens and up until I was 20 I drinked heavily and used meth heavily. But when I got sober I started having panic attacks and nightmares. I have flash backs of the fire all the time and I have to constantly check the stove and ashtrays, etc. to make sure nothing will start a fire while I am asleep. I am scared of people and I can hardley do anything around the house without having a panic attack. My question is can PTSD lay dormant and strike years later? I am constantly going over this in my head. When I think about these things, I have severe panic attaks. I can't control not thinking about them they just pop in my head.

Thunder, how awful for you! Your substance abuse probably kept the anxiety under control (self-medicating). You had a very traumatic upbringing but now you are safe. This is the key to getting better, getting your mind to see and feel the present and to emotionally let the past go (not just "get over it") but working through it in therapy.

Thanks you all. Yeah I've been having alot of problems in the past few days to where I don't even trust my husband anymore. But I've got smoke detectors in everyroom. But they are not ionized which means that they can pick up smoke from a stove but not always from an actual fire. IDK, that's something I learned a while back.

I know for a fact that the answer is YES!! I never gave much thought to the things my dad did to me starting at age 4. He left when I was 12 and disappeared from our lives.
Many years later, I started having serious problems with depression and panic attacks. I had put my past in a little box and numbed myself to it. There's just no telling when that box will open and what you will find when it does. Wish I was still numb. tulips ![]()
