Hi,
I've been reading posts on this website for a few months and must admit the exchange of information is of great help. Thanks to all for sharing !!

I have recently been diagnosed with GAD(generalized anxiety disorder) and was curious as to what meds anybody out there has had success with ?? I have a prescription for Xanax and Trazodone(for sleeping). The Xanax seems to relieve the anxiety for the short term but I'm reluctant to take it everyday for the long haul. I'm not crazy about the Trazodone, though it does help me sleep, but the groggyness the next morning is too much. I was thinking about trying some sort of SSRI as I believe I'm also suffering from mild depression. My Dr may be willing to start me off with Prozac (due to its price, I belong to an HMO). I've also read about Buspar being a possibility. Any thoughts or reccommentations would be helpful. Thanks so much !!!

for GAD you could always try Saint Johns Wart which you can buy in almost any drug store... It is an herb that is supposed to help with anxiety.. I would ask your doctor before switching any medications though.. GAD Medications

I've suffered with GAD for over 8 yrs now.

The meds I've been on throughout the years (not in any particular order) are:

Ativan- short time, didn't do well on it
Klonopin- Short time
Zoloft- 8 years
Remeron- 8 months
Celexa- 8 weeks roughly

and currently on Effexor XR, and it is doing wonders for my GAD.

I found for me personally that anti-depressants worked the best, I also suffer from depression as well.

All meds will work differently for people, it's best to consult with your doctor....

Good luck.

When I was misdiagnosed as having GAD (I'm actually bi-polar) my doctor prescribed Paxil CR, and it did a lot to tame the anxiety I was feeling. I was also given Xanax as a "back-up" if I had a panic attack or was more anxious than normal.
