So, I noticed that on my new medication, it's not the same. It's better, except for the fact that the rare time(twice in the past month and a half) that I take two instead of one 40mg pill because I'm feeling extra anxious and depressed, it has the opposite effect. Last night, I got extremely anxious and depressed- Everything was coming at me at once, feeling lonely and despondent about the future and my situation and hopeless and depressed. I had no answer other than to have a drink to calm my nerves. I was in bed when it hit me and got up to try and calm myself, but I just cried harder, so that's when I had a few shots. No, I'm not an alcoholic. I drink only a few times a week, if that. So, anyway, I've talked about this possibility with my psychiatrist. For example I said that if someone didn't have A.D.D. and they took something for it, it would actually have the opposite effect. She said no, that wouldn't happen. Well, don't kids get high on ritalin? Is'nt that the same thing? anyway, I'm going off topic here. I'm just curious if anyone has ever experienced this before?

example with Ritalin which is a stimulant some people get a high (happy good feeling) and others get the lows (depressed feeling down) and others go on a very bad trip ( hallucinate, have delusional thoughts suicidal, hear voices, think they can do things they cant). some get mixed reactions. it all depends on a persons own body reactions to medications, what other medications (over the counter and prescribed and illegals) that they may be on. ![]() |

YEp. Some med will have that side effect if you up the doses too high too fast. This happens with a lot of anit depressants and a lot of anti anxiety meds, which is why you have to start them slowly and at low doses and take them up bit by bit. i have this respeonse with my stabilizer and my antidepressant, and it is kind of unpleasant until they settle down at the new dosage. Take it easy with them and talk to your P-doc about another way to handle the times when you feel like you need a little more help.

What meds are you currently taking?

hi, after refusing to take antidepressants for months on the grounds i did not think i was depressed, my pd insisted i needed to take them, so i gave in and took one one evening, ok it made me sleep, but i slept till 3pm the next day! and when i did wake up i felt like i was being poisoned!!! i could hardly lift my head, cried for no particular reason, head was really not right, fuzzy, even more difficult to co-ordinate to do anything, even just to get basic dressed! felt ready to end everything(usually i see the funny side of things!)......so i forced myself to the chemist who had dispensed them, only to be sent straight to my GP where i was told i had not to take anymore because i was not depressed!!!!
some people can have adverse effects from medication, antidepressents make me depressed and i am also allergic to some allergy tablets!!! if i was you i would discuss it with the person who prescribed your meds, maybe they can say why it happens or even maybe advise on a different med to take over the role of the one causing you problems. it could be that one works ok but two are too strong, maybe try taking one and a half when you are particularly struggling, see if that is enough to set you straight without the side effects. good luck meds are a minefield which need careful handeling |

@ Despondent - sometimes higher dosages are not the answer - dropping the dosage down may well have a much more desired effect. Also, if these are meds you are taking regularly, as opposed to as needed, there may well be side-effects to go through first, before your body gets used to the meds

A lot of it could be your diagnosis....If you are bipolar II and take an anti depressant, it can actually CAUSE depression in some....not all, but some. It is generally not a good idea to prescribe anti depressants to bipolar II's (but it does happen).
Without knowning your dx and what med you are talking about, can't really help you much. And yes....a stimulant for treating ADHD will get someone "high" if they do not have ADHD. I have seen it myself. I have ADHD and can take a stimulant and go to bed. It relaxes me and I am able to concentrate. But a friend of mine who takes it and doesn't have ADHD he gets a lot of energy and "wired" up. Your pdoc probably told you no because they don't want that fact to be spread around. They are very cautious with prescribing that medication because of the potential for getting "high".

No worries, I'm fine now, it was just too much too quickly. I've gotten better at taking my meds regu, arly, and I no longer let myself take two doses even when I feel I could really benefit, because now I know the reaction.
