It didn't do alot for my GAD or dysthymia directly. It was real good for helping me sleep; I could get to sleep easier and I could sleep deeper. It only took a couple of days before I got to maximum effect. What is odd though is it can actually offset the negative sexual side effects of other medications, enough to where it bleeding over to my dreams; I swear like every other night...

When I was hospitalized, they switched me to Cymbalta (had been on Prozac for 20 years). After one day, a resident suggested adding Remeron, whch they did. I think the Remeron is good--it helps me sleep, so I take my dose of that at night. It also counters some of the negative effects of the Cymbalta--hubby likes sex 5-7 times a week, so it's an issue for us if I'm not interested. And my mood is improving, but not sure if that is from the Remeron or Cymbalta or couseling or work I'm doing on my own or all of the above. I take 120 mg of Cymbalta and 30 mg of Remeron.

Hope it continues to help you, if that's what is doing it. Hey, feel better, OK?

Hey crabshk-

Remeron (Mirtazapine) is known as a "serotonin enhancer" because it is a potent antagonist of 5-HT2 and 5-HT3 receptors as well as having an affinity for a2 - adrenergic receptors which cause an increase in central noradrenergic and serotonergic activity. SO you can see that it differs quite a bit from your basic SSRI/SNRI.

It does effect histamine receptors which cause sedation and appetite increase but it can work very well for those with insomnia and anxiety with depression. It's a very novel antidepressant and sometimes used in conjunction with an SSRI.

Keep us informed!

Jerry

Keep us updated! I'm glad it's working more for you! And with Effexor - be slow to wean off of it - many people report horrible withdrawal symptoms from going off of it too fast. - Just and FYI.

Great!!

I have been on Remeron for over a year now. I have never felt better in my life. The secret, although, is to carefully watch ur positive behaviors in daily situations. The downfall for me was significant weight gain in which my doctors say is almost positively due to the Remeron. So I am weaning off now but have the highest of hopes that I have learned enough tools inwhereas I perhaps can remain off anti-depressants permanently. Good luck to us all!

I have been on Remeron for almost a week now. I have tried many different antidepressants and antianxiety meds, this has been so far the best. The major effects I'm noticing is I feel mentally sharper somehow and a little less easily stressed. I'm getting great sleep but lasting sedating effects are a little annoying, though.

i just wanted to update everyone that i'm not taking remeron anymore and have replaced it with prozac...feeling a little more social with the prozac, so i guess remeron didn't do too much for me even though i was on the max dose.

I know some people who really liked it, they mainly had both depression and a lot of anxiety and it seemed to help both.

Me, I was given it as a sleep aid, doc said I might not feel anything on that dosage and I needed to take it 2 hours before sleep. 20 minutes after, I could no longer stand up and I basically crawled to bed. 12 hours later I could finally feel stable enough to go up and wee. Then I went back to bed to rest some more...

Wrong med for me! But right for others.

Just FYI, in America they may call drugs by their brand name, but the rest of the world refers to it as "mirtazapine", as brand names differ.

For me, mirtazapine is nothing more than a sleep agent. Without it I experience bouts of insomnia and have trouble sleeping, but it helps me sleep. That is all.
