I'm currently prescribed 1mg of xanax as needed for anxiety and insomnia. I just took one pill already and I'm thinking about taking another to make sure I can get to sleep. Do you think this is safe?

I take up to 3 mg of xanax to sleep HOWEVER I am prescribed that amount by my pdoc.

How long have you been taking xanax? How long has it been since you took the one pill?

I would be really hesitant to say, yes, take more, without your pdoc's okay.

Don't do it..........call the doc if you feel you need more!! I don't know what time you wrote the post but maybe you need to give the xanax more time to work. It might meet your needs....!

I've been taking it for about 3 years, but I actually was originally only prescribed .5 until a few months ago when I told my pdoc that I was taking two of them to get to sleep. So he prescribed 1mg to take as needed, but I usually only take it 4 nights a week when I'm having trouble relaxing at night.

I took it almost two hours ago and I'm starting to feel a bit tired but not really sleepy. I'm hesitant to take another because I only have two left to last for the next few days because my therapist has the rest of them locked up in her office.

It's not a good idea to keep increasing the dose of xanax (or most any med) unless your doctor has told you to do so.

Perhaps a different drug would be better to help you sleep. I read that xanax is the most addictive of all benzodiazepines.

How much sleep are you getting per night? Do you practice good sleep hygiene?

Each person will react differently to dosages. I would call and ask what is safe to take. Also talk to your pdoc about the sleeping issue. If you are taking xanax to sleep, there are other options.

I take 0.5mg Xanax as needed to relax. It no longer knocks me out, so I can take it during the day.
I just know I need to be careful how often I take it, as I can get tolerant or dependant on benzo's very quickly

That's what my pdoc had said a few months ago, that I need to be careful to not take it so often because my body will get used to it and it will take more to get me relaxed. He had also said that if I depend on it too much for sleep, then I'll have a hard time sleeping if I don't take it.

I ended up just taking one 1mg pill and eventually went to sleep. But I have an appt with my pdoc next week and I will discuss this with him.
