Some doctors just don't believe in meds such as adderall. They see them as addictions. My doctor prescribes Dexedrine for me and I'm sure there are a lot of doctors who would want me to get off of it but it has made such a big difference in my life too. I'm not sure if your doctor is right or not about you getting off the adderall. I'd go to a different doctor if one tried to take me off of my dexedrine.

Find another doctor. I had one that wanted me off my xanax. I am on a low dose, taking it as needed for 5 years. I never abuse it and haven't needed an increase. I would be lost without it.

Both of my son's are on ADHD meds, I don't consider them addicted. My 16yo son is on the A honor roll and taking college classes. Before the meds they said he was learning disabled.

I think it would be a good idea to ask her why she wants you to discontinue the Adderall. Maybe she has some reason, like you have some risk factor for heart problems or something. (I'm just throwing that out there, not meaning to imply you do or that that would necessarily contraindicate Adderall.) But maybe she has a reason that does make sense. It seems odd she wouldn't tell you, though. If she doesn't have a reason, but is just prejudiced against taking meds for ADHD, then I think look for a new doc. Or have the doc who prescribes your Adderall call her and have a talk.

Perhaps you would have more luck with a psychiatrist. Family docs tend to be a little more afraid to rx stimulants (and benzos, for that matter). In all likelihood, psychiatrist would also have a much more informed opinion on the topic.

Hello!

You don't say why you are taking the Adderall or how much you are taking and who prescribed it originally? Is there a reason why you are not seeing a psychiatrist? Many GP's are uncomfortable prescribing controlled substances like Adderall which is basically amphetamine. Depending on your diagnosis I would look for a psychiatrist if you are unhappy with your current doctor. Does she say why she wants you to wean off the Adderall?
