Hello, I have a question about Hypothyroidism and depression and treating it with Liothyronine Sodium 25mcg. My psych Dr. tried a month of this with me to go along with my Wellbutrin Xl(450), Lexapro(20) and Abilify(2) as my depression was still not under control. He indicated that years of studies supported his theory of the possibility that my TSH function was not correct even though tests showed otherwise. After 2 weeks I noticed a distinct improvement in my depression and other problems such as chronic low back pain went away. My regular Dr. and a Rheumotoligist is dismissing the idea and won't buy into it but neither can really explain why it is said that the TSH test may not be accurate if you're taking Corticosteroids(Prednisone) which I am. Does anyone out there have knowledge and/or experience with this?

I am with you, over two years and not getting more then marginal help from medications.
My Pdoc prescribed the same medication (T3) and in 2-3 weeks I felt a shift in my mood. One day I woke up happy, almost did not recognise the feeling. ![]() I also was not cold all the time. Not out of the woods yet but sometimes have a feeling of hope. My thyroid test have always been normal. Liothyronine or T3 often has helped depression patients. I believe it is a temporary medication unless you have a thyroid problem. I am sent for regular blood tests. I am not on prednisone, glad you feel better ![]() ![]() G1 |

I have heard that the lab tests only spot hypothyroidism half the time, or something like that. I do not understand that at all. Why don't the lab tests pick it up if one has it? I guess if the T3 is helping you, just keep taking it and be thankful something is working for you. I'm glad you are feeling better. (That is quite a high dose of Wellbutrin you're on!)

Thanks I'm maxed out on everything 'cept Abilify according to my doc who believes I'm on best med arrangement for me. I'm also sensitive to cold. I tell my wife that after having back surgery in 2009 something in me changed and I've felt since then that my body is all out of kilter. Something's up I know.

Hello JonFor,
this week my pdoc lowered my cytomel to 25mcg, as my TSH was very low=hyperthyroid. If you are on cytomel I hope you are having regular blood work and EKG's I am on a 'dogs breakfast' of medications. As much as I am happy for any reduction, the cytomel has made the greatest impact. I hope going off does not mean a return to deeper depression. ![]() Still have not looked for link between prednisone and thyroid. Go with your gut feelings as your body awareness can be a great indicator, to keep searching. Maybe having a consultation with an Endocrinologist- will answer some questions. sorry about spelling- [past my bed time. ![]() G1 |

I'm waiting for my cytomel 25 mcg to show up in the mail. I am currently on 200 mg Zoloft and have tried several SSRIs and an SNRI. Aso tried abilify with the Zoloft but it didn't do much. I do have several symptoms of hypothyroidism but haven't been diagnosed yet. My pdoc at the V.A. says it can help depression whether my thyroid is normal or not. I hope this is the med that works, nothing else has. I even tried cannabis but it made me paranoid and my significant other doesn't approve.
