I am going to see a new pdoc. My T thinks Depakote may be a good med to go on.
Just wondering if anyone here takes it? If you do, what is your opinion on it? And do you take anything else in addition? Thanks

i'm on wellbutrin, lamictal and cytomel. i hated remeron and quit it and want back on prozac.....

I didn't care for it,gained weight and was a zombie. It caused me to fall asleep while driving, doc dosed me down, and it still didn't work well for me. Remeron was bad for me too. I've been on Lamictal 200mgs. per day for a couple yrs. now, it has been good for me.
Not everyone responds the same to meds. so it may be a matter of you and your doc working on something else or dosage adjusments.
I sincerely wish you luck with this.

Yeah, it's a great deal to consider. Feeling better due to meds but then gaining weight which starts the mood swings all over???? HMMM

It all depands on you how the med works ,The side affect is weight again, I know someone who was on 1500mg of it and they had to take him off becouse he was agining to much weight, All I can tell you is talk to your doc and then go from there. Take care, Good Luck.

Tried Depakote for a few months..then the weight gain issue started to occur..it helped with my moods for a few weeks..then started to level off..had to weigh all my options..and the weight gain was just to hard to deal with..so discontinued it and PDoc put me on something else..good luck..

I had horrible side effects from Depakote -- bruising, hair loss, nausea, name it -- but it seemed to work well on my mood swings. I just finally decided the side effects weren't worth the stabilizing effect anymore, and got my pdoc to switch me to something else.

I'm on Depakote ER right now and I'd have to say that I like it. While I have gained some weight, I'm not sure if it is due to that, or other meds that I'm on. I'm also on Hydroxizine and oh shoot...I can't think of the name right now. Depakote has really helped me.

I'm the same as Sniffles. I've been on 500 mg of Depakote ER for 15 years and was recently upped to 1750 due to my last episode. I have had absolutely no problems with it, no side effects, I take it at bedtime but it doesn't make me sleepy because I've stayed up a long time after taking it many times.

And, no weight gain.

I also took Zoloft with it - now Wellbutrin & Lamictal have been added with the goal of replacing Depakote ER with Lamictal.

NOTE: I first began taking "Depakote" and had constant diarhhea. I didn't associate it with the Depakote and actually had a colonoscopy to see what was wrong. Nothing was found. Somewhere along the line pdoc switched me to Depakote ER and the diarhhea stopped immediately. So that's one thing I'd clarify...for me there was a difference between Depakote and Depakote ER.

Depakote, even though it had the side effects of the weight gain, hair loss, and probably some other things that I can't remember, was a real lifesaver for me. Actually, I loved being on Depakote.

With Depakote you will have to go in and get your blood taken (checks your depakene levels) every so often to make sure you're not in danger of certain things, but it really has helped me. The only reason I got taken off it was because after checking my depakene levels they discovered that I was in danger of those certain things. So they took me off it. I tried to take the Depakote ER but for some reason after the Depakote I haven't been able to take anything, not even the Depakote ER, due to severe side effects that would never go away. I'd wait 2 months for the severe side affects to decrease but they never did. It was bad. But truthfully, I'd suggest Depakote to anyone. I liked it that much.

Good luck.
